Mike your second cut in the pics would have worked much better if the hinge was more like half way. i cut alot of white oak, steep humbolt or block face gut the heart and a fast back cut. i never do the strap thing. white oak, hickory will never chair if only the sap wood is used for hinge on each side, but you need your hing deeper and steeper.
always, always gut that pink colored white oak. only back leaners don't get gutted and you better be sure then.

I practiced yesterday on culls and laid down money trees today.. Got it dialed in.

Im  doing an open face notch, then plunging into the notch cut, out to the left and right at 45* angles til the bar pokes out each side.   Then plunge into those exits and whittle until i have only 3 tabs. Double wedge, cut the rear holding tab and scoot.  Working great, no pulled fibers in the ones i did today. Thanks gang!

The 28 would be a big help on these big root flares.  If i can plunge through from the notch and break out the back it makes it much easier to keep the butt cut one nice flat plane and still be a low stump i can drive the dozer over without tearing up the pads and rails.

With the 20 i cant quite break out the back so its a little trickier to get the front and back cuts to meet just right.
