Saw one grouse Friday. I had just cut a piece out with the clearing saw, walked to the back and worked. Came out the path about 2 hrs later and he flew up out of what I cut in the morning. Also been seeing a woodcock in the same spot on the road every morning. He must like something at that spot.

Saw this at the feeder the other day. It's heavily zoomed in from my cell phone, but I swear that's what it looked like...

No clue what it was.

This year PatD got our first bird feeder so it became my job to keep it supplied with feed.  As Fall is creeping in, I have actually been amazed/surprised at how the numbers have diminished. I know that they migrate South, but we are "South".  Now there are no Woodpeckers, and only a couple of Blue Jays, both of which are my non-favorites of all time.  We still have a few little brown birds (?) and happily a nice little "flock" of Cardinals which are my all time favorites.  The Mocking Birds are still here and merrily singing but they never come to the feeder.

My sack of feed/seed that I thought would last maybe a month, may now last till Spring.

We have bird feeders up at the cabin, and here in Harrison. I've also noted that our birds will just disappear for periods, but the more time I spend in the woods up there, I find they are not really gone. They are out feeding on the seasonal seeds and fruits that mother nature offers. Then, one day, they show up at the feeders.  It always amazes me how those little chickadees do not freeze solid up here in the winter.

The juncos will soon move in here when the weather gets colder. They feed on the wild seeds or weeds. Lots of them around fields. I watch them pick gravel from the driveway all winter. Blue jays are always busy in fall and winter around here. They sack off acorns and other nuts like squirrels. Chickadees like the ironwood seeds, they'll stash'm. Of course we have a family of crows here all year getting scraps from the table. They usually nest in the back yard spruce trees. You can tell the young'ns from the adults, they are skinnier and smaller and always squawking. But I think they are probably all grown up now. Never had the crows ever bother anything around here, not even a garbage bag.

Every day I keep expecting to not see it but we still have one small Hummingbird hanging around, as of last night. It's got a couple sugar water feeders to itself to fatten up on. It's getting pretty cool at night now, I expect it to move along soon.

LOL! Same here. That's funny, I haven't seen one in about a week and was thinking they were done, time to put the feeders away. If you've still got one, I guess I'll leave them out another few days.

For whatever reason I always read New York in your username, but I see you aren't in New York at all, and that's not in your username. I was thinking in NY it's bound to be a bit chillier there and the hummingbirds probably are done there, but probably not in TN!

Saw a grouse again today fly across where I had cut. Looked like he was heading to the woods road. I worked along that road and never saw him again.

I saw one today also.  It's only the 3rd one I've seen this year.

Larry

Most of my resident hummers left September 1 but I had stragglers until the 15th. Than I had a few from the north stopping by to re-fuel on the trip south but haven't seen any for a couple of weeks. Suppose its time to take down the feeders.

Out camping, fishing, kayaking, and taking pictures this week. These guys will be here for quite a while longer.

LOL You're Not far off!
... Originally from the Buffalo area (lifelong Sabres fan), lived in Rochester suburbs for ~20 years after college, then moved down here about 10 years ago when things started getting REALLY whacky up there...
Should have done it decades sooner, but I'd digress.

The "New Yankee" part of my username was a play on words w/ the business name (New Yankee Sawmill). It started out as New Midway Sawmill, because I live on New Midway Road. Everyone here knows New Yankee Workshop, and since I'm dealing with wood and likely wood-workers.... I figured I could steal some of that cachet w/ a little word-magic. I also have a pretty strong New Yawk accent for a guy from Buffalo, and the instant I open my mouth down here, well, the jig is up. I can wear all orange and tattoo a Power-T to my forehead, but as soon as I ask for a cup of "Caw-fee" at the breakfast diner, I wonder if they'll spit in my meal?
... So, New Yankee Sawmill sounded better in my head than New Midway Sawmill, and the rest is history!

Your mind was playing jedi tricks on you, as I am from New York, but I currently live outside Knoxville. What's the phrase, yankee by birth, southern by choice? Seriously though, anyone who has contemplated and pulled back, sell your frickin house and move. I wish I'd done it when my kids were born, instead of waiting until they were half grown up.

After visiting New York on an RV trip and seeing all the crazy regulations that go into just a camp site it showed me how crazy it can be. Some pretty beautiful spots up there though.

I saw the 4th Grouse yesterday.  ffsmiley

I saw a grouse Sunday, on the way home from the woodlot, cross the pavement by an old logging road. See them there all the time. It's just before the little brook I gather water for the garden from. I rarely see flocks anymore. But sometimes there are 3 together in the back yard, but not for a couple years. At the woodlot there are 4 spots to watch for a grouse along the road. They all involve a little clump of alders.

Hummingbird may be gone... We didn't see it yesterday. It's gotten cold enough here to turn on the heat in the house last night, and the kerosene heat in the shop.

Turkeys have turned shy around here. Usually see 10 - 30 in a group in the fields around here and 6-12 in the yard. Haven't laid eyes on any for a long time around home. Saw some all summer on the way to work. I've seen them leave the trees and hop down on the fields at sunrise different times.  48° here today and 85° in the shop. :D
