I first started with a 6x6 inch "dam" that's 2 inches high. But once I installed the dam, the corner interfered with the chain drive located underneath. So I bevel the corner the same distance as one of the short magnets supplied with the machine (see first image).(Image hidden from quote, click to view.)
Not to be a downer but there are filings and oil sprayed all over inside the sharpener not just at one place. Although if one could make a dam whose magnets were easier to pick up and remove than those in the oil surrounding the pump, one might make the cleaning process easier to keep up with. The bar magnets that come with the sharpener are very strong and the process of picking up one in a plastic bag would tear up the bags easily.
