This was from the end of March. About 7 feet left then.

The dead tree in the center, just to the left is my skytrac poking out. Way in the back is the top of my well house, 8 foot tall. So, a little melting to do still.

Warm some days in the upper 50s and freezing overnight.

Wrapping up my job down here and will start hauling my equipment up next week. The "local" CalTrans camera to my property has been MIA for a couple years now, so no eyes on the snow. Supposed to be flurries Saturday just above me.

A neighbor reported a burglary last week up there so my son and I flew up the hill to check things out at my place as well as others. Nothing seemed to have been touched.

There was a couple little banks of snow left. No winter damage this year 😁 A very tall dead pine that the woodpeckers had made some big holes in broke off midway up. The remaining will be much safer to drop.

Yesterday I took my mill head up and used the Ford to set it on the track. Hydraulics are nowhere near as smooth as the skytrac. But got her done.  Installed a "gravity flush" RV toilet in my bathhouse. Want to see if I like those for the cabin. Much easier to winterize.  My camp trailer pad was a bit sloped so moved 4 or 5 buckets of dirt.

Today up went the camper. Turns out there were a couple little dips on the "improved" pad that were not in sync on each side of the pad. So, by moving the trailer a little forward or back I was able to level without blocks!

I ran the well pump yesterday for a few hours and got a couple hundred gallons before a tree shaded the solar panel. When the sun came around, it didn't start back up. It didn't get hot, it's got power (through a Linear Current Booster) so not sure what's up. I think I have spare brushes if I can find them, so I'll try that Sunday or Monday.

Always something.

Update 6/19/2024

Some success the last few days.

The pump had leaked some oil from the gearbox and was acting seazed up. Turned out that the brass brush holder was contacting the commutator and left some minor grooves. Filed the brass down and cleaned up the copper on my lathe with some emery paper. Re-installed and it pumped about 600 gallons in 4 or 5 hours. Solar powered.

The dead fir that lost it's top 20 or 30 feet had another 20 feet standing. Cut that down and cleaned it all up. Pretty rotted.

Replaced my pop up trailer's 6 gallon water heater with a tankless I picked up off the auction site. Works great. No more mini explosions lighting the old unit's pilot light. And, not burning all that propane just sitting there.

Re-installed the upper dance floor. Ready to get to work on the rafters!

I made some 4x7 rafter stock (24 of them) a few years ago before I knew better. The logs were smaller diameter such that I got from 1 to 3 per log. Maybe I got 5 from one or two. Anyhow, they've moved a bit. Going to dig into them and see what's useable. I have two good ponderosa pine logs that could probably make 7 each. I also have my good logger possibly having something for me at the end of the month.

My Skytrac is effectively down so moving logs is going to be a challenge with the 545D.

Ok, was going to wait till the morning since the rafters are on the west side. But, it's cool up here today. Low 70s.

Pleasantly surprised. There are 17 heart centered and 7 not. One of the centered one wasn't so centered. That's the one on top row, third from the right that lifted up.

Two of the non-centered twisted a little. Top row second from the right and one on the bottom right.  And a couple have a bit of crook. Very little in the way of bowing. These stock pieces are between 26 and 33 feet long. I need 23.5 foot for the rafters. So, maybe 2 or 3 might not work (the twisted ones)? I need a total of 28, IIRC.  These wonky end will be cut off.

There are three points of contact along with the top lap joint for the ridge. A single timber screw at each beam crossing. Thinking I'll be able to correct the little bit of crook and bow with a come-along and the screws.

So, with the logs I have on hand, I should be good to go!

Your Skytrak sounds like my Lull.  I fix one thing, drive it a bit, and something else breaks or leaks.  I crank it up and I am a brooder of foreboding, waiting for a loud bang!

I did some thinking about it overnight and came up with a plan. The winch setups I made for lifting the beams are having a second life. I lagged them together back to back. One cable does the lifting, the other raises and lowers the jib boom.

First one picks a rafter from the pile up to the wall beam. They are not heavy, just incredibly awkward.

The rafter can be carried or rolled down to where it will be placed. The second set will lift it up, rotate it 90° and the the jib adjusted to set it in place.

6/27/2024 update:

Tuesday I brought up a bunch of odds and ends. I assembled my rafter template and made a stub rafter to test fit rafter seats. I managed to cut six seats in the mid perlin and three in the wall beam before dark. None are required in the ridge beam.

My brother came down from Ashland Oregon to help. We spent Wednesday cutting the remaining 48 seats. Here is what they looked like Thursday morning.

On to the rafters. Winching up the first one.

First one in!

Got three done today. Last one went up way quicker than the first!

The mansion on the hill. Enjoying the journey, although the brutal climate I could do without. I love winter but not when it interferes with life and good fun. Carry on, stick to your guns.  ffsmiley ffwave

Finally starting to look like a roof.
Loving the look of that steep grade, plus it'll shed all 20 feet of snow each winter.

You know better about your capabilities than we do. Don't cross that boundary and take precautions up there. You're working remotely remember. Goes without saying, I know, but I'm gonna anyway. ffwave ffwave ffsmiley

Internal coolant leak into oil pan. Probably cylinder liners leaking. Getting conflicting opinions and nobody that is willing to work on it. Would rather drop a new/rebuilt engine in it.
