A few years back I built a stump grinder for my skid steer so I was thinking that if built one of these I would use a wheel and carbide teeth in it's design.

If you're topping a tree in half and let's say you have a line pulling it off it's lean, you really need to be aware of what actually keeps a tree from barber chairing. A bore cut, face depth and trying to keep up with the back cut isn't 100%going to do the trick and when your belted off 40-60' in the air there's no place to run. I've brought this up before and got a lot of pushback but just be aware  that if you're on steep ground or brush and no place to get away from a chair you might want to cut the side straps because that's what will keep a tree from chairing

Stove pipe just means there's not a lot of taper in the log or tree trunk and looks like a stove pipe.  Alligator is another and more accurate in my opinion, term for when a tree barber chairs because an alligator will bite you. It's not as common in our wider grain softwoods or conifers but it definitely can happen in our tighter grain stuff if the face meets.

Well as interesting as this 'tale' is, I have no idea how I got involved in it and if I was I would probably recall my part in a slightly different light than that of comic relief. Let's just say I don't recall it not going down that way in the parts that I can't remember ffcheesy .

What I mean by it taking as long  to grind the slab as it does to make them is that there isn't a steady flow of slabs like a big mill. If it takes 2, 3, or even four minutes to grind up a slab, that is perfect. Low horsepower over a lot of time. If I have to  spend $50k on a machine, and spend my spare time doing it, then I'll just hire someone to haul it away. This discussion was prompted by the fact that I have seen machines that I think will do this, I just haven't been able to find one, or any information on one

I more focus on the hinge thickness, bore cutting or chasing/cutting the hinge as the tree falls works best for me

You can bore into the middle of the notch too, roughly thickness of desired hinge

To anyone else that's familiar with tree swallows and chickadee calls, do you notice the tree swallows have a exact same call as the chickadee(not all their calls but this one), it's a high pitched gurgle sound best I can describe it
