Title: What are you doing today?
Post by: clww on January 26, 2014, 02:54:33 PM
Today it's Sunday, so most are probably not out working in the woods, at their business ventures, or doing whatever it is we do to make a living.
I'm doing laundry, watching the TV, starting dinner, and bringing in some more firewood.
What are you doing today?

Playing on the internet, tinkering on addition, half watching "Arrow" with Zach, and putting off plowing the driveway so the wife and kids can get out for school and work tomorrow.  I plugged in the Bobcat a couple hours ago so I suppose it's about time.

I am just now logging in. Sitting here at the computer and realizing that buying an OWB that was a little over sized for my heat load was actually a very wise decision. It seems so nice to have the first and second story's at 73*(1650 sq/ft combined) and an old Michigan un-insulated basement (600 sq/ft) at 60*. Throw a couple armloads in in the morning and the same at 6pm. Haven't used any fuel oil in nearly 6 years. Getting ready to watch one of the X-men video's with my son.

Thawed out a frozen  frost-proof waterline to the horses stock tank. That went real well.Went grocery shopping with my wife, bothered some people up in Canada about a debarker for my mill, watched the thermometer climb up to 10 above then give up and go back down.Time to get out of this DanG recliner and take a walk up to see how the Lt30 is doing.Ran like a top last week end.

Hang on tight Den.
He still is the father of the boys and hope things can be much better for all of you in the future.

I can't imagine going through what you are enduring now, and you are not alone.

But then, I cannot imagine how these situations get started in the first place.

I've become an extended house guest at Lou's in the U.P. because of the weather the last few days. This morning I took Catherine to mass, (my first mass ever) and this afternoon Lou and I have been working on deer antlers. Something we began last night. We hung a set of 5 that belonged to Lou's dad, a set that belongs to David Lou's boy that was shot from the same area I shot my deer this year. We also repaired a set of Lou's that had broken, and then rehung those as well as a couple of Reh antlers that he shot in Bavaria while in the service in the 50's.  The oldest set of antlers we hung today were from 1928. :)

Just listening to the wind blowing at 31mph with gusts at 39mph and the temp at 9 deg F. Temp is falling to a forecast low tonight of -13F and a high tomorrow of -8. And very dangerous wind chills tonight and tomorrow. I'm hoping the wind will take all our snow somewhere south of us.

That and my wife has on Alaska, The Final Frontier. It's the season final episode tonight. I just looked and it's warmer today in Alaska than here.  :(

Right now we are building a vac kiln for installation in MO. I hope to sell one this week that could go to Southern CA. It sounds like either would be a relief from these Arctic temperatures. At least, there are only a couple/few inches of snow out there.

took the quad and hooked up to the arch and went to pull a log out of the bush and upset the arch and log , bent the hitch and got it all sorted out and figured if that's the way it's going then I refuse to play . Put the quad away and took the CBX out and went riding . 150 miles later and life is good again . 71 here today , I have been riding before in January but never in a shirt ! Red

Hauled the tractor today to where some land was being cleared about 10 miles away.  Felled about 20 trees, bucked them into logs, hauled two loads home, went back and got the tractor.  Mostly chinaberry with one cherry, one hackberry, one water oak, one very ugly persimmon, and a mulberry.

Weather was nice to day 56 degs so I when to the sawmill to move lumber. Removed
500bf of lumber out of the kiln into the trailer. Then moved 400br of walnut and red oak
into the kiln. The walnut and oak had been air drying for a couple of years. Two weeks
ago I mill a red oak and today I move the lumber back by the kiln to dry be for going
into the kiln. It was 1:30 so I said enough for the day so when back home, took a shower
then a nap. Hope every one is doing ok with this weather, be safe and keep warm.

Delivered 3 face cords of firewood, skidded firewood logs, cut and split 5 more, got a nice fire going in the garage, sharpened some chains.  Watched the boy build a little wooden plane kit (helped a little).  Had some potato soup for dinner and hot fudge brownie and ice cream for desert.  I'm half-heartedly watching the pro bowl.

I will post a pic tomorrow.  It is coyote ugly.  You won't believe it.  About 10" in diameter. I don't know why I hauled it home except maybe for the challenge.

Den,

Saw it into boards.  There is one good 8 foot section.  I have a segmented bowl turner that likes to come and buy some.

Danny,
That Mulberry must grow differently where you are. I would think that ours would be too feathery for a segmented bowl.

Went to church this morning with my wife, youngest son, and one of our grandson's.
Then we all went down the mountain to take my 87 year old mother to lunch, something we do almost every Sunday. She's the only one of either of our parents we have left so we try to do something she enjoys every week, and we all wind up enjoying it. Got home about an hour ago, and now I'm killing time here. All in all, I'd say it was a pretty productive day.

Swapped out about 5 or 6 sprinkler heads with drip fittings and ran 100' of tube to about 20 bushes.  Trying to conserve water since the lake is now down to 17%.  All the ground cover will die back (as well as the weeds ;) ), so it won't be so bad.  We only had about 5 days of rain since last rainy season (about April).  There is talk of banning all outdoor watering by March if we don't get some serious rain this way. Then I can kiss all my plants goodbye  :-\

It's been cold and windy all week.  Today's forecast was for upper 60s and sunshine.  Client arrived at 10 and we milled a short walnut log and 3 eastern red cedars.  He drove an hour each way to get them done.  Had dinner, watched the Pro Bowl and Grammy's while working on emails and computer work.  Tomorrow's forecast is for 10° and subzero wind chills.

Yesterday,  -32°C   Fed animals in the barns, started 766 as it has the snowblower on it to clean yards hydraulics were so cold would not work for 3/4 hour, finally worked, rad was froze up and low on fluid, added anti-freeze and thawed out/covered up, cleaned yards.  After lunch asked kids to start loader tractor as a person was coming right over to purchase some beef, 5 minutes was an hour later and the tractor would not crank over.  Block heater cord was plugged in to the tractor but not the wall.. ::)   Finally got that one running, took some hay out to feed cattle at the bush,  got there and mister wolf ( well turned out to be a missus) was sitting there watching the cattle, well she ain't watching no cattle no more, couldn't get a bead on the one in the bushes but there's always tomorrow.  Had the kids go get the carcase with the skidoo( could have brought it with the tractor but they always want a reason to ride skidoo)  Fed the animals in the yards and barns again, took the wolf to dad's to skin out but it was already froze too hard.

Drove to Menard's to pick up some 3/8 pex for use as a drain ine on the BioPro.  Cut firewood most of the day taking advantage of the relatively mild day.  Prepared for the artic clipper that showed up today.  Bitter cold and high winds.  Linnea is happy I cut firewood yesterday  :)

Today is all inside work putting the BioPro back together, rebuilding the MS460 (scored piston), feeding the boiler every 4-5 hours thanks to the cold temps and nasty wind chill.  Might change the fuel filter in Linnea's Sprinter or I might take a nap.  The nap is sounding pretty good...

We have mondays off for the winter so we have been working around the house, still unpacking.
Today we took the pellet stove to be repaired and then I put a new starting fan on the woodgas truck. It worked well and started the engine on straight woodgas so I took it for a drive to celebrate.
First time since November.
Also have lamb shanks slow cooking on the woodstove since noon and it's smelling really good. :)

This is for "Any Day", not just yesterday in particular.

Got home from the trees at about 5:45 pm, with the temp at 61 degrees. The latest winter storm "Leon" is supposed to nail us here at The Beach with another round of snow, beginning Tuesday afternoon. With this in mind, I brought in as much firewood as possible. By 6:15, the thermometer had dropped to 41 degrees. :o

The lumber goes in racks, separate by species, and sometimes by sawing method, i.e. flatsawn versus rift/quartersawn.  They can pick thru the rack as long as they put back what they don't choose the way it was before.

Peter,

All of my "hardwood lumber" is either 8, 9, or 10 foot in length.  10 feet is the max for the kiln.

I will not respond to the rest of those Lumber Selling Wannabes.

Thanks,  :)

We ended up getting 11" of the snow, so I'm not going anywhere today. I've been sitting around the house all day with my wife. She's able to "remote in" to her work on the computer upstairs in the office. She came down awhile ago for lunch and said,"Why don't you defrost the freezer?". Brilliant! smiley_love Perfect day for it outdoors (23 degrees), just put all the stuff in a plastic storage container and sit it on the back deck.
Have a fire going in the fireplace, dogs are taking a nap, and I may, too! ;)

When Pat was making the cake she had to trim the crown from the layers to keep them from "earthquaking" in the center.  I took the thin slices and made us a cake.

I am not real happy with my 16" Byrd cutter that I had custom made for my central Machine  planer.  It leaves small grooves along the board and small corragations  across the boards. they are smallenough that some are not real noticeable , but a light sanding dulls the tops and they show up or a poly finish if not sanded.

I was hoping that would be my outcome .  I wonder if it would help to regear it to an even slower feed rate.  I can't figure the slight grooves the length of the board because the cutters overlap .  I guess I am the only one with the problem ,everyone praised them before I purchased mine ,and almost everyone gives me hell when I explain my outcome.I really got smoother finish with the triple blade head before if the blades were sharp
Title: Re: What are you doing today?

Don
Can only figure that something isn't right with the way the individual cutters are in place, or that a pressure roller, or chip breaker are out of adjustment.

What it reminds me of is a blade that has been jointed too much and the heel is hammering the wood, making it shiny. But that memory cell is from a long time ago so may not be accurate.

Can't offer more other than to look at the adjustment and condition of the cutters.

Slight raised area usually mean a chip in each cutter, but am sure you have checked for that already.

After inserting individual cutters, is there a honing, or jointing, procedure to true up all the individual cutters?
Title: Re: What are you doing today?
Post by: Don_Papenburg on January 30, 2014, 07:15:16 PM
That was one of the selling points No honing No adjusting.  just turn the carbides and screw them back down.  Now these grooves are not deep but visable . and irritating.
I know what you mean about a knife not set proper or the heal hammering . This is more like all of them are hammering  or dull.  I have my under rollers set just below the table to keep the board flat on the surface ,no bouncing.
The groove that run parallel  show up real bad around the hard areas surrounding knots the worse. the perpendicular groove are always on the board.    I have a cheaper insert cutter in my jointer that has less knives in a straight cut pattern that does not leave the signature .  I got that cutter from Woodworkers Supply . they did not have a 16" cutter head for my machine , so I splurged and bought the best one.

Title: Re: What are you doing today?
Post by: Bill Gaiche on January 30, 2014, 09:03:44 PM
I really can't help you with the bad finish. I have my bed rollers set at .003" above the table. Have everything else set at the factory setting. I have run post oak, red oak, bur oak, cedar, pine, and walnut through it and it does a very fine job. I believe I would check with the manufacture of it for some help. Do you have a part number for your cutter head? bg

The cutter was special order.  Because it was 16" and the pacific rim manufacturers had switched to only 15" by the time I needed to rebuild .  I sent my 3blade cutter to Byrd so that he could match everything .  My planer looks like a Powermatic 15"  they had the Byrd shelex cutting head .There are other companies that have planers that look like that only most had straight knife cutterheads. Maybe I am just too picky when it comes to my planed wood. But I hate sanding.

Good looking cake  8) 8) and even better looking girls  :) 8)
We processed 4 face cords of wood this morning and pushed them into the woodshed for us.  That plus the four from yesterday will last until break up.  I hope  ::) :)
I fired up the Fabtek and let it warm up  and went through all it's motions and checked it out.  Tomorrow it gets it first workout since the injection pump issues.
I plowed more snow.  Opened up the neighbors drive so the propane truck can get in this week.  Hadn't been plowed in about 3 weeks and there was a lot of snow and then I cleaned our drive up.  I put the dirt bucket on the Bobcat so I could peel off the snow build up down to the ice underneath and pushed all the banks back.  I'm running out of room to put snow and will have to put the blower on a tractor if we get much more. I like to scrape the drive pretty close at this time of year because of the southern exposure.  Beginning now the hill will thaw out with a few sunny days even if it's cold.  Dark ice melts faster than snow but the sun has been rare the last three months in this country.  We'll probably get some rain now and we'll have a bobsled run.  That's happened before  ;D  The kids are planning on sledding on it tomorrow.  We're getting a little light snow and it should be fun  8)

BTDT but last time I got smart and bought a heat gun.  Not at all spendy and worth 10 times what I paid for defrosting jobs.  Works at least twice as fast as a hair dryer.

Job for today:  Haul brush to my neighbor's brush pile.  I don't have enough dry stuff (except for my cured firewood and I don't waste that) to burn it here.

Cut up an loaded the remnants of one of two lilac bushes that a kind lady conveniently parked her car on top of in my driveway Wednesdy during a snow storm (skidded off the road and I suspect totaled the car).  Didn't get a chance to thank her as I have been looking for an excuse to delete those miserable, in-the-way things.  Why I ever planted them there is beyond me.

Hauled brush to neighbors and promptly stuck the truck - only a 2x and it is helpless on any slick stuff.  Only two inches of snow but couldn't move forwart or back when I tried to get to the brush pile.  Walked home, grabbed car and the set of tire chains, back down, laid out chains ahead of wheels and pulled out easily. - I'll mount the chains tomorrow as I will have at least two more loads of brush.

More snow moving. Got the farm plowed out yesterday, going to work on cleaning up the mill yard today. Used the cab tractor yesterday, with heated cab, Kubota today, no cab.  :( Cab tractor is too big and clumsy to work around the mill. It must be time for a new battery in the Kubota, wouldn't start on it's own at -10, had to put the battery charger on it. Of course it didn't help that all the lights were on and I didn't realize it the first time I tried to start it. :D

The courts were closed today, (Lincoln's Birthday), so I slept in late and played hooky from the office and went out cutting firewood.  Still clearing trees and cutting firewood on the "garden" property I posted about.  Every time I think I am getting close to getting done, the guy decides he wants to take out more trees.  Today I fell and bucked up a 24" diameter Pine and two 14" oaks and hauled it all home, (a little over a cord).  As I was getting ready to leave, he comes down and points out a number of new trees he wants me to take out, and then mentions that once I am done "on this side", then I can start working on the other.  Not that I mind, all good wood and not too far from my house.  But what started as 7 or 8 trees, has now gotten up to over 20, and it looks like I am "maybe" half way to what he now says he wants cleared.

Perfect weather for the prescribed burn.  It would help your stomach issues, Danny, to avoid grits for the next decade or so  ;D

Ordered the new coolant pump for the JD4520 this morning - it should be in by 8am tomorrow so tomorrow will be spent indoors fixing the tractor.

Today I am rebuilding an older Gateway computer.  Needed a replacement NVidia graphics card (used is all that is available) and the replacement card needed a new cooling fan.  Put a new evercool fan on it and installed it. The computer appears to be working.  Just need to install new drivers for the long range wireless card and it should be ready for the new office in the addition to the saw barn.  I might get motivated to do some R&R on the Woodmaster 718 in preparation for milling the ceiling and wall paneling.  Or I might just opt for a long nap.

Guilted myself into not taking a nap and doing the R&R on the Woodmaster.  Sized up about 700 bd ft of aspen.  Today I swapped out the coolant pump on the JD4520 and put in a new fuel sending unit while I had the hood off.  Should be back in business tomorrow.

It's supposed to get very warm and rainy weather coming our way.  Put that on top of all the snow on the roof tops and it could spell disaster.  That said, I spent a good part of the morning pulling snow off the roof top of my garage/shop.  I had to use a snow rake because I cannot climb due to a fear of heights.  My house has a standing seam metal roof so the snow simply slides off of it.

I've had this week off from work as a vacation week.  I can't wait to get back to work to get some rest.  Roger

Doing chores for a friend this week while he's on vacation and trying to get some of my own stuff done too.  The weather turned again (which is normal when I'm doing his chores), wind blowing as usual and dropped about 20*  :-\.  He has forestry special tires on his payloader and I noticed this morning the front left is going to have a baby before he gets home, being in Cancun I have my doubts he's going to miss seeing the birth  :D.

Got all 300 seed starts planted and under the grow lights today.  Also got the Improved Meyer Lemon tree I bought for my wife for her birthday on Wednesday planted.  Last year I had a real problem with seed germination, (had them in a window sill, but they got too hot and killed off most of the seeds), so I went out and bought some fluorescent lights and tried to build a homemade seed germinator.    Hopefully this will improve my results.

23 types of tomatoes, 13 types of peppers, and various cantaloupes, water melons, egg plant, cauliflower, cabbage, okra, summer squash, cucumbers,  beans.  If all goes well, this will be the biggest and most prolific garden yet.

I took my son to Lowes to pick up some seeds - ended up with 17 packets.  Tomatoes (3 types), eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower, bush beans, cucumber, zucchini, watermelon, herbs, butternut squash etc.  The plants grow very fast, no weeds, sounds like a win-win to me.  Time will tell.  I didn't like the need to buy "nutes" for plain hydroponics as well as having to change the water as the salts build up.  Right now, I just plan to raise some goldfish until my system gets running well.

EDIT:  Plus, I like to make things complicated :D  Just call me Rube (Goldberg) ;)

My bench top is made in similar fashion out of oak.  That's a slick idea putting the top back on the sawmill to level it out after glue up.  I'll have to try that sometime.

I like your bench...plenty of light to see what your doing also.  And a whole room for gun stuff...that's just luxury. :)

Drove 225 miles to look at a WM mill. Started bright and early only to get stalled 2 hours behind a traffic accident but oh!!!! what a day. Finally got to our destination and met a wonderful miller. He had a log waiting and he let me go to town on it giving me all kinds of pointers.
We talked business and it was decided I'd sleep on it overnight and let him know tomorrow if I'd give the Lt 40 a new home.
Oh happy day  8)

Going with a 40 , good for you, If it's a good price don't wait someone will buy it.

Taking a short road trip in a minute to look at an '82 1 ton Chevy 4X4 dually with a 6.2 diesel, a mason dump box and Western power v-plow.  Looks good in the pics  ;D  Supposed to be low mileage too.

The truck was junk.  The tranny slipped and someone had changed the fluid recently and put in hydraulic fluid instead of ATF.  They'd spilled some on the air breather cover.  Since the fluid was fairly clear you could see black particles in it.  The engine smoked and didn't clear up after it warmed up.  The plow that had been on it in the pics and was in the description was no longer included in the sale.  The cab was really good and had been changed I'm sure.  The box had been redone too but the mechanics of it weren't good.

Good deals are like an eclipse, they don't happen very often and sometimes the skies are cloudy so you miss them but they do in fact happen and when they do..... 8)

I finished mowing the back lawn for the first time.  Yup, got the ZT stuck again.  Those wide rear tires have so much flotation that they just sit on top of the ground and spin so thankfully, I have an old mower with the blade deck removed.  A long rope and a tug got me to high ground.

I bought some paddle tires last year.  Put some Slime in them when I mounted them.  They weren't too expensive online and really helped with traction.  Might be to aggressive on some lawns.

I'm shootin lacquer today...my favorite finish.

I'm doing something today I have not done since the 7th grade. Go on a field trip with a bunch of 7th graders!  This will also be a first. First time in the twenty years Tammy has been driving school bus that I am going to be one of her passengers.  I was asked if I would like to ride along to go to a Detroit Tigers game. I could get a ticket for $15 and the ride was free!    :)   Here I go. I hope I am still as smart as a 7th grader. :)

Rained out today, but the first three days of this week, with the help of my son, managed to buck, split, and stack a years worth of ash firewood. If the splitter engine would have lasted another hour, thinking we'd have finished this pile.

I know it is sacrilege to be turning such nice ash into just real nice firewood, but it is what is in the cards.

The dreaded ash borer is bound to find my white ash trees, so I'm bound to get them before they do.
I had an idea to cut all the ash trees this spring. After felling about a dozen and having a good size deck of logs, I went through my woods to mark the remaining ash trees over 12" dbh...  there are another two dozen standing yet. Guessing I won't get them all cut this year. But will take more as I find the time.

Lot's of clear ash firewood pieces in those stacks.  Split most in 2" thick slabs much like making lumber. Pieces stack well for carrying around on a pallet.

I haven't figured out the value of the ash logs as sawlogs vs. the value as firewood, but with the price of heating fuel I'm thinking firewood is pretty close if not more value. I should have scaled the logs in that deck before turning them in to firewood. Maybe will keep that in mind for the next run.

Sooo...after I cut the red cedar (I showed a photo a few posts prior to this one) I was feeling pretty good! Time to get back to the pine I'd been cutting for my nephew's camp. I pulled up an old log I'd had in the yard for a good while to make some 12" wide boards for his porch ceiling. I started slabbing off the top and everything went great. Then I flipped it and the blade seemed to want to almost stop! I persevered, and the blade popped off the rollers. OK...put the blade back on and it came off again! So I thought the log was dried out. I put on a new blade...the same thing happened. I tried a third blade, and it cut great! I was zip-pa-de-do-da-ing along and then the sound.....METAL!! OH NO!! How could I be hitting the log dog? I know I left it down. I looked...it WAS down. Uh-oh...Yep...barbed wire. The culprit all along..Sooo, I went and got my my tractor, wrapped the chain around the cant, and dragged it to the woods, where it will go bye-bye over the next 10 years. I hope today brings a metal free day!

I milled 200bf of White Oak yesterday and stacked it on one of our air drying stacks. The weather man said it was
going to rain Sunday so i wanted to cove the stack with a tarp but left it home. I though i would go out Saturday
and cover it but here it is Saturday and its raining. Will see if it goes by soon and then i can go out and cover it.
Boy this weather sure has been a mess this year and its keep me from doing any mill work.

It would take a lot to get me up at 3:30 on a Saturday morning but that would do it. Congratulations. I finally got a rain free day to work on our fifth wheel. Water got into the bed area, the floor and lower walls were completely rotted out. I scooped all the junk into a garbage bag, cut out the stringers and now have the new floor framed and installed. Next step is repair some corroded wiring, insulate the floor and lay down the particle board. I don't particularly like the stuff but it is half the price of plywood and will work in this application.

I'm just sitting here, doing my physical therapy three times per day, and reading with envy about others going about their normal work. I'm ten weeks out from quad repair surgery and have another eight weeks of trying to get my knee to bend again. Then probably another six weeks before I get full release from the doctor.

Good news is my winter ended early. Bad news is I'm going to lose about six months of work this year.

I've had my leg and knee first in a cast and then locked straight out in a brace. Makes it hard to even sit in a chair to get on the computer or to do taxes and paperwork. Even getting into a car is difficult with that leg locked straight out. But today I hobbled down to the shed and knocked some rust off the Woodmizer.

Otherwise, I'm just plain bored.

Well that bit, typed up a nice reply and whoosh, couldn't post.

So anyways, pinhole cameras are pretty fun to shoot with, can be very serendipitous if you come away with a good pinhole photograph as framing is very imprecise to say the least. There are a a number of companies that make pinhole cameras but most people just make their own. Coffee and paint cans are very popular as are cigar boxes and Altoid tins lol. All you need is some brass shim stock, a very fine needle and some black tape. To keep it cheap, you can use photographic paper as the negative.

I'll probably head back and take another look at these trees again in the near future.

It's about all anyone can do around here today is "inside" work, the rain has to quit someday!

This is the Wilson Cell Booster kit that I bought:  LINK (http://www.wilsonamplifiers.com/db-pro-amplifier-kit-w-omni-65db-3g-building-75ohm-841262/)  It is the dual channel unit and with the Omni antenna.  They make other antenna options to suit the user's needs.  I have the same unit at the Cabin and a very similar unit in my truck.

Shop around and you can beat that price by $30-40, and with free shipping.

They will easily take you from no signal to 2-3 bars.  I am absolutely sold on them.

I remember when you talked about putting one in the cabin. I wondered how well they work.
Now we know  ;).  Thanks for the feedback... Been wanting to get one if they're worthwhile for our cabin.

It is pricy, but since we have become so dependent on having cell service, it's good to have something that works and is dependable.  If the cell tower is up, you have service.

The dual channel amplifier picks up both Verizon and ATT signals, so whichever service that you have or even change over to, the booster still works.  I also favor the Omni antenna rather than the directional Yagi because of the same reason.  Different cell services towers are in different places, so I want to be able to capture the signals from all directions.

The booster in my truck has paid off many times.  Saw jobs are not along the interstate, they are in the woods with minimum or no signal.  Flip the booster on and bingo, I have bars.

Not possible, but the deed is done.  This one was out under a hip roof so the work was agonizing cramped.  Half up, half crouched, and very hurtful.  Thankfully, I carried everything so it only took one trip to mark & cut the hole, mount the unit, & wire it up.

After a shower and lunch, I took an Aleve and have the afternoon off.   whiteflag_smiley wheeliechair

We went for a ride. Up North,Jackman. More than 100 miles one way. We stopped at some of the Historical Sites and the Scenic ones. There is still ice on a few small ponds. One pond,on the edge was shaded by a hill and I think you could of walked on it,it was still nice and white. But I would not have tried it. We went up many years ago, just wanted to see what was going one. Saw lots of loaded log trucks,3-4 wm mills and a bunch of skidders. We went one way and came back another.

Was great to meet a young man with so much talent. He does have a nice setup of a lot of toys to make a lot of wood projects. Met his 77 year old grandpa also. Very nice gentleman he is. I do have a piece of Jake's handy work which was made on his home made CNC router. Will add some black to the letters and some finish then I will hang this out under our gazebo. That I do have a photo of. Thanks for the gift Jake and thanks for the tour of your place. bg

Home from work earlier today. 3/4" of rain in a two hour span makes for too much mud. 40% chance of it again tomorrow.

Freezing rhubarb then preparing a piece of ground to plant strawberries.  When that is done I'll do some work on the ATV trailer I'm building for a friend.

You can only pull so much stuff to the same pile before it gets too high for the tractor to climb over.  That is when you reverse the rake and push it all together.  Works very well.

Did a bit of puttering today. Pancake breakfast at a friends firehouse over in NYS. Puttering around the mill checking measurements. Sawed out a 6"X6" and decided that was enough of that for today. :D Put in a marathon logging and milling week that ended yesterday with the delivery of a timber order. Someone commented that one of the timbers felt pretty wet still. I said, yeah, it was still alive 20 hours ago. :D Sawing and logging in the rain wasn't my idea of a great time, but everything got done.

Today, I traded a chainsaw for a trailer. One of the contractors on a job we're working upgraded his trailer with a newer version, so he had one too many trailers. I acquired a two-axle, open trailer 16' X 6' that has a 4 ton capacity with a fairly new wooden floor. He got an excellent running MS460. :)

Score!

I attempted to do some welding today.  I had tapped into one of three aluminum circuits coming from my fuse panel - two 50s and one 40 - to run my welder.  I was hoping for a 50 but 40 will do.  However, it turned out to be a copper 30 amp that popped when I welded too much.  What the heck, who would switch from copper at the panel to aluminum romex??? >:(  So, the 40 amp was labeled "dryer".  I made a pigtail (since my dryer is gas) and ran my welder from that.  Guess what, a different 30 amp popped.  >:( morons labeled the panel...  So I spent the day pulling a new 50 amp circuit and bought a breaker just for it.  Now I KNOW this one is a 50  :D  Back to welding tomorrow - and maybe re-labeling my panel :-\.

Seems (to me) that you would have suspected which breaker was going to which circuit when you had the respective CB off to tap into it.

I'm thinking I missed something.

Well, the actual chain of events.  Some months earlier, I had flipped off the A/C units (30 amp breakers) and forgot about them.  I had identified an aluminum romex in the garage attic that would work for my needs (so I thought).  Because I was working alone, I flipped off the three breakers that had aluminum wire (stove top range, oven and dryer (as it was marked)) and wholly expected it to be the 40 amp dryer breaker.  Went back up in the attic and tested the romex with a sharp prob and meter to make sure it was dead before cutting.  Wired up my welder (using the aluminum grease stuff and screw lugs, not wire nuts), flipped on the three breakers and, drum roll, nothing!??? What the??  Flipped on the 30 amp breakers and I had power.  I was not happy and really could not understand where the wire changed from copper to aluminum.  I used the 30 amp for a while but was a real pain to use for welding as it kept popping.

Got my 50 amp working today and could weld non-stop! 8)  Finished up my bucket for my Skytrak and need to take it up to test it out later this week.  Got it halfway up on the trailer.

I took a 4x8 piece of 3/16 diamond plate, cut it down to 6' and rolled it.  Cut up the remaining piece for the ends.  Found a scrapper blade on CraigsList and welded that on the edge.  Trimmed off about 6" on each end and welded them to the side.

Got some 1/8" C-channel that was being tossed out and stuck that on the back to hopefully make it good and stiff. Had a piece of 1-¼" plate that I torched up into brackets to hang on my Skytrak fork rails.  They are 50 pounds a piece.  I figure the whole thing weighs about 500 pounds.  I used 7018 rod throughout - kind of a pain to weld with but pretty clean welds that are a bit stronger.  I'll probably shear the metal before I pop the 10+ pounds of welding rod I used up.

I'm hoping!  I bought a skid-steer bucket off eBay that is 42" wide.  Did lots of digging with it, though not very efficient on my Skytrak.  Had to re-shape, re-weld, reinforce,  three or four times and it just isn't the same :D  This new one will be full width and should work better.  I designed this to be mostly rolled back when mounted as the forklift doesn't go back very far (20° maybe) and tends to dump the dirt :-[  I can roll the unit forward almost 90° so I think this will be just fine.  Rolling that diamond plate was a huge challenge!

We were clearing today near a property line. Nothing uncommon, but the neat part was I got to watch a female box turtle dig a hole and lay her eggs. :) Went to set the saw down and there she was, a few feet away. It took her nearly two hours to complete her mission. Really cool to watch, and makes me feel like a little kid again.

Burned a couple of stumps by the cabin using downed trees for fuel.  It's a slow process cutting tops and brush then hauling to the fire.  Using Quaking Aspen, Balsam Fir and Spruce.  They go whoosh on a hot fire.  It was hot on top of that weather wise.  My ears and forearms are on fire.

Somehow, I'm in between sawjobs right now, so I figured I'd go and look at a new one, the guy said he has 9 logs from trees that were taken down in a neighbors yard!

I did tell him about the contract and explained the quickest way to find metal in a log!

He said he wants them sawed and will pay any damages.

Best thing is it's only 5 miles from home.

Finished splitting next winters supply of red oak firewood, thanks to help from neighbor and his hired hand. We had two 25 ton splitters running non-stop from 7 am till noon. It's piled out in the open sun and breeze, should be plenty dry by fall, then it gets stacked in the barn. All this from 2 trees and one punky log from my sawmill log pile.

I will only show a picture if anyone wants to see.  But the wife,(said she did not hit it that hard) broke the bracing  on the steering front end of the  mower, so I have it tore apart.  It started with the 5 cent fix on the steering arm, and now I have it all apart.  Hot and humid as you would expect.  Just got to love it!  I still believe that many times the high carbon sheet metal is not the answer for high vibration applications, it seems to be prone to breaking, regardless if you hit a large rock.

You got rocks too?  I hit a couple every single round.  Last Monday one of the three blades stop cutting so I dropped the deck.  Simple problem, the pulley on that shaft had stripped cogs.  But than I noticed that spindle had some end play so I pressed the shaft out and discovered a bad seat.  So than I checked the next spindle and the mount for it was cracked.  Oh well, might as well order three new spindles.  Than I happened to notice big chucks missing out of the belt.  Since I can't do grass until parts get here, might as well sharpen the blades.  Surprised they would even cut.  Than I noticed one of the height wheels with a really bad wobble.

Good thing for the internet and Jacks Small Engines.  I beamed $200 off to Jack last Tuesday and he promised to have new parts on my doorstep Monday evening.  And the grass don't care a lick.
