Are you sure it is not a Pine Sawyer? Let's see a picture of it.

I found a white spotted pine sawyer beetle and was sure at first it was an ALB.  After looking around on the web, I convinced myself it was a pine sawyer.  The pine sawyer has a distinguishing white spot right between the base of the wing cover.
see this link:  http://www.uvm.edu/albeetle/identification/

While the pine sawyer will mess up down lumber, it does not attack live trees.

Ok thanks guys it is a pine sawyer and not a alb, glad that's over!

I'm glad there are a lot of Mis-Ids, that means people are paying attention.
Trees are good.

Same thing just happen to me! There seems to be a lot of them around. Maybe from all the down pine from the Oct storm? One thing for shure is they are one ugly bug!
I've met Vets who have lived but still lost their lives... Thank a Vet

Family man and loving it :)

This is the time of year when the adult Pine Sawyer beetles emerge from the trees.  They will then find new down or dead pine to lay their eggs, and the eggs will hatch into the nasty grub-like larva that tunnel through the wood!  So it is not a surprising time of year to find lots of White Spotted Pine Sawyers.  That's also another tip that it might not be an ALB - I believe the ALB don't emerge as adult beetles until later in the summer - around late July, I think.  So it's less likely that a beetle spotted at this time of year is an ALB.  Sorry about the "spotted" pun...

I saw some last year that I believed to be ALHB, but after reading through this, I'll double check any others I may run across.
Great thread! ;)
