Left Coast Chris

Hi all,  we visited the Founders Grove in the Avenue of the Giants this last weekend.  We visited before but it is always an unforgetable experience.   The trees and land scape are so captivating it is hard to describe so here are some pics:

Another try with the pics:

The last post is a table slab that I was able to bring home.  It is 3'3" wide and 7'-0" long.  The curl is very nice.  Should make a great dinning room table.

Great trip again this year.

Excellent photography on the shots of these mammoth trees. Very difficult to get lighting, depth of field, and angles as good as you have them.
And thanks to the person in the pics for an appreciation of the size of these trees.

Incidentally, does she live in a doll house?   ;)   ;D

Yes,it would be a great trip. Probably someone would hear me talking about sawing one of them and throw me in jail.

Thanks and glad you enjoyed them.  I also love to go into all the wood working shops along the way.  I brought a number of my bowls I turned and traded for six of the slabs.  Otherwise they want way too much for their items in the shops if you do any wood working yourself.   Pretty inspiring place.  Especially on a sunny day which is pretty hit or miss over there.

We have some nice Redwoods growing here in NZ. But they are not much more than 100 years old. So only about 1/2 the size of those beauties. Those are something that would be worth visiting.  :)

I could spend days there.  The air seems very oxygen rich.  Maybe the ozone and the ferns with decomposting needles.  The trees though are so impressive you fee like you are on another planet.  Of course to wood workers its like a dog finding a 6' bone. :) :)

This fall my wife and I are going to take the long flight from east coast to west coast to visit my son in San Francisco. We will rent a car for a few days and tour wine country and then up north to see the big trees. Where are the best places to go to see the giants?

Just keep heading north from San Fran on 101 until you get to Avenue of the Giants.  It is well worth taking a full day to drive through and stop in the shops on the way.  It will google for maps etc.   Not spending enough time there would be the only minus to the trip! :)

A few years ago we were coming back from visiting our son in Chico, and decided to cut across from Redding to the coast. I told my wife how someone would always get sick on the bus trip to Weaverville (Trinity was in our league), after a few miles of switchbacks, she could see why. Everyone should see these trees at least once.

I really need to visit those forests at some point.  Although I haven't been to the North American west coast my wife and I visited Australia several years ago and visited some coastal rain forests along the coast and some beautiful botanical gardens.  Very impressive trees.
Lots of toys for working in the bush
