i recently picked up an 028. it needs a new bar, chain, and clutch assembly, the teeth on the drum are very worn also. i was thinking on changing it out with a oregon 2 piece, but i am not sure. what are your opinions on what bar, chain, and clutch i should run??

A lot of experts here that know the bar and chain combo that works good for this saw... sorry, but I just run a 20" bar on my Stihl MS361 with 3/8 chain. Works great, but might be happier with a shorter bar.
Hope others will chime in and give you a leg up here. ;)

In this pdf on the 028, indicates 16, 18, or 20" bar for this saw.

Myself, I would stick with Stihl.  ;D

What are you planning to use it for?  Bucking or larger wood probably 16" would be best. Limbing then maybe 18, probably wouldn't go to 20" though. My 361 likes the 20" but not sure the 028 would so much. I'm assuming it has a spur sprocket, and if it has groves worn well into it then you should replace. I don't know you'll see a lot of difference if you swap for a rim sprocket/clutch. If if came with the spur style I'd probably just go with that. Maybe someone else can offer some insight on differences there.

hey i appreciate you taking the time to check the stihl site, beenthere
and i was planning on using the saw for quick cuts. the thickest being a width of maybe 8"? however i am not a chain expert and do not know much about what kind nor type of chain would be best as they make quite a bit to choose from, along with teeth styles and teeth spacing

Have you checked out Bailey's site (left column with Lucas Mill in yellow over green - I like that combo  ;D ).
Bailey's carries bars and chain and is one of our fine sponsors helping to keep this forum going.

I've got three of them, first brand new saw I ever bought in 1987. I run a 16", .063/325 bar and chain combo on it. Replaced the sprocket on it twice after cutting at least 300 cords of wood in 25 years.
