Kelley is thinking of cutting a cookie out of it to show the age.  Not sure what else he will do with the rest.  Maybe he will let us know?

Cookies would be a waste of some great slabs for table and bar tops.    Cookies will split and come apart.
Been there, done that.   Never got caught [/b]
Retired and not doing much anymore and still not getting caught

That's a big one, which could make some great slabs, as DR Buck wrote. We took a willow oak down last week that was 104" in diameter. Unfortunately, the main trunk was mostly hollow.

Yup, the tree diameter "looks" to be real close to the height of the man standing there. Around 6' or so?

If that trunk is solid cookies would be a waste of good slabs.

Just passing on the size Kelley said it is.  I cant personally tell from the pic.

However it looks huge.

Kelley is new here so please be kind he is looking for advise.

Didn't mean to be "unkind", but the size of the tree has something to do with further processing, be it tools, equipment, technique, handling, sawing, drying, finishing, ... etc.   :)

I sure hope Kelly doesn't feel intimidated by me or anyone else. We are here to sort it out and help Kelly any way we can.  ;)

What kind of saw would you use to get slabs?  A big chain saw mill?   I would Love to have one.

Cutting one cookie from the base of that monster would be a great thing, if possible, to date the tree.  If it was solid and cleanly cut it could be used as a display for the tree's major events like droughts, fires, etc.
As to slabbing that thing, you'd either need an oversize slabber (I think Lucas can make them up to 9'?) or possibly split it.
I think it could be done with a 5' capacity slabber, but it'd be an awful lot of work.  Essentially you'd have to Bibby the log down to size.  And the thought of that makes me tired! :D

That tree has lots of potential.
I was thinking that Lucas may make an oversized one, and hoping someone may have one, or lease it....maybe buy it.
I am thinking that if I had a 4' bar I could get it laid down from the narrowest spot, and then use the oversized Lucas to cut cookies out of the stump, and slab the rest....but still in planning stage.

Man those limbs are bigger than most of the trees in my area.

Kelly, it would be a lot of work but I bet you could find someone with a 2 man saw big enough to cut your cookie.

That would be good....anyone know anyone with a ten or twelve foot bar?

dang big old tree  might be a bunch of metal tree house spikes inside that old one...

Had a response typed up and hit function key & lost it hate this laptop...

couple quick thoughts.

Use old Garden Tractor frame, some old 4 or 6" band saw blade chunk 8 or 10 feet long or a New 2 man cross cut saw.   build a rocking shaft swing arm off the pulley on bottom as drive.   build a pivoting/rocking shaft frame over and spring load the arm assy off the wheeled mower.   Drive it in place fire it up and let it run on thru.

When that tree trunk lays out on the ground, it is going to take real horsepower and hydraulics to move it , much less lift it.  Good Luck,  Regards, Clark

I wasn't thinking about a 2 man chain saw.  I was talking about an old school, 2 man crosscut saw.  They took down trees a lot bigger than that.  There must be a few still around in useable condition.
