Are the smelts fried  ???.

Absolutely!  Coat them in an egg and milk mixture, Coat them in flour, fry them in vegetable oil.  Smelts are running now so I'm going ice fishing next week.

Coon,I have heard of using big bait for big fish. Someone put some Northern Pike here at Mosher Pond. Just down the road from me.It's a small pond, but feeds into the Sandy River many miles away. The state of Maine had a fit when they found out about it. The Pike can take over a pond. There will be a few ponds affected by this and that is before the Sandy River.

Hey those  smelts are really great.  If you clean them, the best way is to snip off the head and feed them through the wringer  on your washing machine--use just a little pressure or you will be  cleaning the ceiling. :D :D :D :D :D     Northerns are the best eating there is---except sunnys

cfarm, those northern pike sure can take over a waterway fairly quickly as they are aggressive. They are very tasty to eat if they come out of cold water and if you know how to dea with the Y bones.  If that pond is shallow I would not eat those fish in the summer but boy oh boy in the winter months my belly would be full of em.  Did I ever tell you I like to eat fish.   ;D  :D

I haven't had smelt in years as a kid we usually netted a lot more than we wanted to clean.
I trained my younger brothers and afew others on cleaning them :D. I explained that you bite off the heads and finger out the guts. They got pretty quick at it(true story) first time I explained I had a toothache and used a knife slow enough to convince them biting was quicker

I checked the creeks for chubs in spring and when I found them I knew it was about time to spear fish usually pike
  This was in upper mich
P.S.  I was suckered into the above method of smelt cleaning as a wee tike
So I was just passing the wisdom on :D
Experience is a rough teacher first you get the test later comes the lesson!
