Hello,
My name is John and I'm a newbie. I've just purchased a Peterson ATS 8 with slabber. Haven't taken delivery yet but will post when I do. I'm a builder by trade but I also do alot of furniture and cabinetry. So much so that I built a new workshop on my property to spend alot more of my time doing furniture design and cabinetry.
It has been one of my greatest fantasies to be able to take a tree, live, dying or dead and save it for posterity. And so my story began over 2 years ago when I got a call from my local tree warden about a rock maple being cut down on our historic town green. I decided to take it and build our  new kitchen from it (BTW, kitchen is still not built, hearing it mighty from the wifey, but am working on it!) Well I had these beautiful logs and no way to process them myself, so I checked around locally and found a guy with a woodmizer. He did an okay job as we hit some nails and produced wavy slabs, but I was so excited I didn't care.
I didn't think much more about anymore miling until I was reading my local newspaper recently and they were lamenting the fact that the old european copper beech trees at our local library would have to be cut down due to fungus rot. Well, it looked like I would be going on a second date, so I called the library, talked with the director and told her I would take the trees and donate my time to process them into furniture for our new library expansion. Then the local press came and interviewed me and I realised in in the sawing business or my name is mud.
So here I am, with a new Peterson on the way and I couldn't be happier. I appreciate this opportunity to share my thoughts with you here. I've lurked here for a short time, while doing my research and it has helped enormously. I hope one day to be as experienced as alot of you here and am offering any knowledge that I have developed over the years to anybody here. I'm looking forward to developing a relationship with all here and I hope that it will be  mutual.
Take care,
John
PS I have a website that I designed recently at www.johnrussell.com
It has the logs from my local library on it under the furniture section.

Welcome and congrats on the mill.
I'm from Guilford as well. No shortage of mill owners in the area.
I noticed the trees missing from outside the library a couple of weeks ago good to see them go somewhere.
Joel mill your wavy boards from the green?
Like to see the Peterson in action theres a lucas in North Guilford everytime I get down that way to see it run we end up shooting the breeze...and forget the goal.
I'm looking to upgrade to a hydraulic woodmizer or a swinger that can cut timbers would like to see a Peterson and theres a rep in NH thats a long ride though.

Ray

I edited out part of the post since there another fella with your name locally in the flooring business.
Lot of stuff..

Welcome to the forum Jonny

The Peterson and slabber should be just the thing for breaking down those big 'character' logs into some really interesting bits of wood  :)
Look forward to seeing more pics of the projects as they continue.
And the kitchen... ummmm.. "I will get to it after I have sawed up these couple of logs.. OK " :D

Welcome John
We sure do have a lot in common, your intro could be my bio ;)
If it can't be nailed or glued then screw it

Welcome, Johnny. Good to see another Peterson owner here.
Do yourself a favor, if you haven't already, and get a metal detector. You may find that beech to be an alloy of copper and iron.  :D Hope that is not the case, but better safe than sorry.

Well I guess you obviously made your decision between the two swingers :D Good on ya - post some pics of your new toy coming to it's new home, oh and don't forget the pics of those beech opened up!!

Thanks for the warm welcome, feel at home aready, when's dinner time! To Ray in Ct, you're welcome anytime to see my setup. Not sure if I can contact you directly, so let me know how to. I've been up to see that Lucas in North Guilord also. That was 2 years ago and I was very impressed with its capabilities. With that being said, I'm much happier with my selection of the Peterson. It was more expensive, but with it's better engineering (am I going to get into trouble for sounding like I know what I'm talking about?) and ability to cut wider boards made the deal for me. Also, as I'm able to pick up sawmill from the Captain in Mass. I get a full demonstration. That is a nice bonus.
Take care,
John
