so we recently have been taken over by mice, like they got in my old truck so I put in a mouse bait block in it and it was just a peanut size the next morning, catching 5 a night in traps in the shop, even pulled out the old long spring raccoon traps and they are working. these suckers are everywhere! anywho we decided to get some barn cats. we have a roughly 220 lb great dane and were concerned he would want to eat or at least taste them. well quite the contrary. as I open the shop this morning I watch the most friendly cat I have ever seen walk out the door and chase my dog across the driveway til he could leap up and latch onto the face of this giant ox of a dog. paws covering both of dozers (the dog) eyes and pull a full 8 second ride on his face. the cat jumps off his face and runs to me and hops rubbing on my leg. this is one mean totally sweet cat. the cat bullies the dog all day running out of the shop just to attack this poor oaf of a dog. the cat follows me to the house and procedes to chase the dog around the house! this cat wont let the dog near the door of the house. I had to lock the cat in the shop. my dog is sleeping at my feet whimpering and twitching. he may be ruined! I thought it was funny so I thought id share

:D We have a similar problem with  two toy poodles and a cat with a serious attitude. Lulu don't take no crapola from no stinkin cat, she will give chase and let the fur ball know who is the alpha in this house. Gigi on the other hand is a complete wimp. The cat torments her and she will not fight back. Occasionally Lu comes to the rescue. One day the bully was sitting near the sliding door watching The Wuss getting up the gumption to come past her. Lu came out of the bedroom, assessed the situation, walked up behind the cat and let out a loud ROWRF. Cat bailed in a HURRY and the other dog came in. Lu beats on her too but won't let the cat, it is funny. They remind me of Garfield and Odie.

that is funny stuff, seen it kinda sorta,  our old cat would lay on the top of the steps and wait for our Dixie to come up, Dixie would stop and fret for ever, then finally bark for help :D  Family pets and their antics are priceless. If there were only a way to capture all the moments on video.
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

We have exactly the opposite scenario in our house.
Our male cat(neutered, not declawed) is about 4 1/2 years old and 16 lbs.
Our newly adopted boxer/mix pup is just over 8 weeks old and 8 lbs., and she is bar none the feistiest little pup I've ever seen!
She gets slapped up, clawed, and hissed at almost daily and keeps coming back for more. She chases the cat all over the house. The cat jumps up on the couch back and just sits there, and it drives little Bella insane because she's not big enough to get up on the couch yet. smiley_furious3
It's hard to believe that the cat could be so intimidated by such a little animal. Scamper (the cat) was a feral cat that my wife adopted, and before he became an indoor animal, we'd seen him come home from the woods carrying a full grown dead rabbit that was as big as him.

So far, I just love our newest family member. She is a keeper!

Dogs will always be mans' best friend, no argument that point.  But as soon as a cat is allowed in the home, they believe they own it, we are their slaves.  Roger

We had a calico cat that would sleep curled up on our collie.  She would walk under the collie's chin and rub her back.

I was standing on the porch one day, and the neighbors husky began to come down our driveway, growling toward our collie.  Before I could act to get my dog out of the way, the cat shot out from under the car, and knocked the husky senseless.   :D

so another first today... early this morning my oldest son and I head out to the field to look for turkeys and the cat thinks its going too. many times ive had to pen dogs to exclude them from the hunting trip but never a cat. the cat stayed in the big dog cage all day with the door open.feelings hurt I guess.  the other cat we got at the same time has never left the shop. all day long all doors open and she has no interest in leaving.

Lu was on the sofa chewing a rawhide stick and dropped it. Rather than get down she laid there and looked at it. Gigi walked over, picked up the stick, carried it back to her bed and settled in beside it.
Lu was beside herself.  :D She looked at me and started to whine, I told her to go fight her own battles. She jumped down, Gigi raised her head and Lu retreated to my lap with the most pitiful look on her face. I was in tears laughing. Finally Gigi went for a drink of water and Lu retrieved the stick. This is worse than raising kids. ::)

I had a cat that used to hunt with me, lots in fact!   Though on long walks I ended up carrying him back wrapped around my neck with his arms/legs draped over my chest.   I believe it was half cat half lynx, it was biggest cat I have ever seen!   (Garfield) was his name weight was just under 30 lbs, his head was big enough to scratch both ears with thumb and pinky only.    He loved to do to work with me too, I worked in garage with lots of mice & chipmunks as well as a nice river with muskrats.   He spent a lot of time laying in the back window of my 72 Plymouth would stretch out and shove out against the B pillars!   cat filled entire back window of that 72 Plymouth...

My sister stopped over one day with her chihuahua dog & cat was laying in yard & started stalking him.   Sister grabbed him & picked up dog yelling and cat kept coming after him!  She jumped back into the car and I had to rescue them lol...

Growing up we had cat that jumped on head of German Shepard & rode it out of yard several times.   Great mouser too & good momma cat.

We have an old tom cat who is not de-clawed. He has been hanging around in the shop for years. We have a 5 month old pup who always wants to romp and play. Sometimes he get rough with Bill the cat but Bill takes it with only an occasional swipe of a paw. Sometimes they lay on the floor nose to nose. Kona the dog will gently bump Bill with a big paw. Bill will gently swipe Kona's nose with a paw. They just lay there and do it over and over. I'll get a picture tomorrow. It's really funny to watch. I love animals.

Here my two. Both are no longer with us.  :(  We got them at the same time, kitten and puppy. They would eat out of the same dish, side by side too.

My Nan had some bloody nasty cats when I was little. One would claw the eyes out of anything what came near it- dogs included, another used to kill rabbits regularly. The rabbit cat took a piece out of my aunt's dog's nose one time, it had to be stitched up by a vet.

as for mousing with barn cats- A good terrier will out hunt a cat any day.  ;)

I had a dump off cat once that loved everything . I was out mowing the ditch and went over the culvert and something popped up for a looksee. I went down the ditch a ways before I looked into the culvert because most critters run away from mowers that are cutting .  There was a little grey tigger kitten. very friendly .  He ended up in my house I was building . as I worked he kept out of the way . If I sat down he would jump on my lap. One of his jobs as he saw it was to hunt flies that populated the windows . He would go around every window eating the flies ,then come get me so that I could lift him up to the top sashes we would have to do every one then he was happy .He loved to ride in the car ,tractor and combine.

it probably wouldn't be as funny if the dog wasn't so big and the cat so small! he can stand flat footed and put his head on my shoulder. he likes to bury his nose in my beard. he is a great dog and a big baby.
