Gas can vents

GA MTN Man was looking for a replacement cap for his lube tank so I thought I would help look by doing a bit of surfing and came across this little item that I'm sure will interrest abunch of you. I know all of us hate the new style gas cans. I'm going top order some and give it a try.

The cap broke on one of my old cans..  so applied some redneck engineering.  A perfect fit.

I could see putting those on a lot of items. 5 gallon pails of hydro oil, paint buckets, my gas cans that came without any vent. I gotta get some.

You better be careful!!! One of those news men that thought ear plugs were rubber bullets in Missouri will call that a "Detonator! ".

ALSO, Be careful with those new gas cans!
The gas won't come out until you turn the green ring and push on the end of the spout. I went to fill my chainsaw, I turned the can up, turned the green ring and when I pushed the spout on the edge of the tank, there was built up pressure in the can and pressurized  gas blew out, filled the tank and went everywhere!

StimW:  I think I'm pretty safe here. There might even be a couple of old timers left who consider "detonators" to be fishing equipment....

I just ordered 20 of the vents on ebay, less that $8.00.
Why 20? I need about 6 and I have friends!
I might as well pass some out, it makes me look smart.  :D

I bought several and they work great.

Used a nail to get the hole started.  Then hammered in a spike to just under the diameter.  Then tapped the vent in with a hammer.  This avoided drilling.

I hate the new cans.  Had to buy one when I was out and about and needed gas.  That will be the last one.  It will be converted.

I've done that and it works fine but you have to keep track of the cap.  I bought the ones from Amazon that LeeB found.  They are dirt cheap, easier to install than a valve stem and you won't loose the cap. ;)

Guess you could go hang out at the tire store. They would probably give you all the old ones you could carry away.

I got the vents in the mail and installed one so far.
I drilled a pilot hole then a 1/2" hole and it popped right in and fit so good that it was hard to turn to put the cap square with the center line. The rubbery plastic seems to swell back up one I popped it in keeping it in place well.
I did find that there is a flat spot/boss on the can where a vent should have gone so that made location easy!
Over filled my chainsaw again with that STUPID green lock can spout that I bought for the saw. It takes three hands to control it!

 We installed the valve stems in our 5 gal cans at work the other day and pleased with the results.Takes a half minute.
I'll keep an eye out for the vents Lee posted about too.
