I worked for a heli logging company in British Columbia and reforestation was a sensitive issue. After the clear cutting and replanting, we had to virtually sneak in to spray the alder and willow that were choking the seedlings. The urbanites, who lived and worked in logging communities, jumped all over us for killing trees and Bambi habitat. The natives got into the act and ran us out of their "traditional territory" We could not stand up to them without being labelled racists.
They had two issues. We are seeing more super mills and fewer small local operations so the logs are being trucked or railed hundreds of miles. The local natives are not getting jobs in the mills. Also, they were quick to learn clearcuts mean a huge buffet for moose and deer as well as lots of wild berries. Maybe I am overly cynical but it seems they just want a big payout for "loss of their traditional way of life". Do others see it this way?

We were in British Columbia. I travelled through the UP when I was a kid but don't remember too much of it. It was a lot shorter from southern Ontario than going the all Canadian route.
