Sounds like you have a birch customer. I see you still have snow. Mine is long gone, until we get some more.

Still no sawing. Friday, I broke down my mill were it was and moved it to the house. Thru the weekend, I got it installed on it's new trailer.

After moving the saw head to the house, about an hour later, I had open the blade guards and this sucker was inside rap around one of the wheels. Yep, I jumped a little. :D

New home for the sawmill. Should make things much easy to load or unload not bending over all day. ;D

She is level and all bunks are level. I did have to shim here in there. I still have to add the stabilizers and then paint.

That picture is a bit miss leading in that it was taken the the first few days of March right after a fresh dump of snow. We have been snow free since about a week after that until friday. Got 8/10th of much needed rain with about 4 inches of very wet snow through Saturday  that was gone by late after noon yesterday.

Yesterday this carpenter from Boston called me up and said he had two cherry logs from a sentimental cherry tree cut down in Boston Common by the city.

His boss, a restaurant owner wanted them cut up to make cheese boards and other things out of.

I told him to bring them right over.

They were the knobest things I have ever sawn.

He wanted them all flitch sawn and some where 1" thick and some where 2" thick.

I gave him a phone number of a guy in southern NH who may dry them for him.

Then my neighbor may plane them for him.

He was happy and I only hit one nail, maybe 100 bdft hard to measure no clear top end due to crotches in the trunk.

I had to make a table and a fence to hold the short pieces over the middle rails. We make a ram out of a 4' 1x8 to roll them out of the truck.

He said it took 4 guys to pick them up and load them into his truck.

I agree that those were some knobby logs Jim.

I made the first trip today to my customer that I described in Reply #3323.

The difference is that my sawmill is now set up are ready to saw.  (That is a '71 Bronco.)

My two able bodied helpers bringing a log to saw up into stickers.

How 'bout that drawbar??   ???

I found a Mystery log lying among the Pine logs.   ???

I doubt that we sawed much over one Mbf today, the majority of which were 1X6's.

Is the mystery log a sweetgum?
No question. Distinctive star shaped leaf. Its sweetgum.

derhntr,
I sawed some badly bowed cherry for myself the other day. I edged the back side so both ends were approximately same width with a rounded front. Made two fireplace mantles out of it taking advantage of the unique shape. I sawed a 1/4" trim cut and showed to my local custom furniture customer and his assistant suggested putting a 12" round handle on each end and hang it up as a cross cut saw. I had not thought about it being the same shape but they are right.

I sawed a couple of cherry logs today - all live edge. One 10' log had so much shake in it I ended up pitching nearly all of it. The first one made 2 nice mantels an 8/4 slab and several 4' 4/4 boards. Then I cut a couple of ash logs mostly into tomato stakes. When done went to saw off some legs on a log bench and half way through leg #3 it pulled out of the mortise and kinked and ruined my freshly installed turbo 7 blade.

For sure. Only good thing for that is that it's not growing anymore. :D

4x4American

We have them growing up here by the thousands so I thought so just from the smell of it  puck-smiley

Magicman

Yes, it is a very nice setup and it was shady all day.  I doubt that the mystery log will get sawn.   :-X

I counted 64 logs, so it will be a stretch for all of the logs get sawn during this tour unless some get culled.  We will see.

:o That is a very nice whack of Red Oak.   ;D

I am steadily chipping away at my road trip SYP whack.

I have sawn ~half of the logs.

And the stickered stacks continue to grow.  We will tally at the end of the job.

Another Mystery Log?  Yes, it is one of the Southern Yellow Pines.

The tree was felled last week.  The lumber had a nice rich color but was not sticky.  This butt log had ~50 growth rings and was ~22" diameter.

The pile is growing and I can't get the mill to this location - the road is mud.  The bigger butts are 20+ inches - all spruce to build my buildings...there are about 40 more sawlogs in the bush.

The 2 spruce in the pic will give me about 6 x 12 footers, 3 x 10 footers and a a few 8 footers.
