Most will say they are the same, but a wagon vise has a large "L" shaped arm the screw and chop runs thru to clamp to the table apron and top.           Andy

Now for a dime's worth 0f sugar. All fab work is complete now. I still have to install the dog block in the tail vise. Got the deadman drilled, edge profiled, and installed. Got the tool well/ plane stop built and installed. Drilled the holes in the right leg for the holdfasts using my new 14" brace and 3/4" auger bit. Very little effort due to the long swing. I love it. The last step will be router sled the top flat, trim the tool well to maintain 3/8" above top, then cut the notches for stringers so that the well can be turned over to fit flush with the top when not needed. Profile the top edge all around to keep from splintering during use, install lower shelf, then light sand and apply BLO for about three coats, then USE IT ALL UP!!!!

I know that is too much sugar for a dime, but I like the final results .      Andy

I bet the shop smells so good!!  Nice work, Andy.   What are you going to make on the table?

Well I thought this would be the finishing post for the bench build, but more urgent matters have happened!!
Built the router sled, and clamped the leveling rails and started the cutting. All was going really well till the last foot of travel down by the tail vise. The locking lever on the router base came loose, and dropped the router bit 3/8" lower than the cut was set for. A big large gouge cut into my brand new top! No worries, it's just a tool. A little pine dust and some epoxy will fix it up. Will have to leave the finishing up in the air till I can finish this emergency project that just came up....... Hey, I thought I was the only one that had things like that happen. Looking good anyway!

Great work Andy.
Loving the look of that tail vice, as has been said, thanks for the inspiration.
Oaks coming down where they shouldn't and routers coming down when they shouldn't . . . some days gravity just seems to get out of control!

Now that all the house ordeal is over, I was able to go to the shop and finish finishing the bench. It turned out really well, and now I think it is too pretty to use!! Nancy says use it or she will!  I know she will too.    Andy

Great work Andy.
"too pretty to use" ?
Time to install the shop managers bed on the strechers - he'll put it to good use!

Gotta say, I admire a guy that can stay focussed while the roof is coming down around his head.

Andries,
After seeing your post, I realized that I didn't show the dog bed shelf, or the spring dogs that finishes this project. So here they are.

Next time you see this table, it will be full of Magic Boomerang Walnut! Nancy wants a hall table, and she wants to use that material.    8) 8) ??? :P :P running-doggy running-doggy smiley_smash smiley_smash

See?
Pretty, but not too pretty to be working.
That line would probably work for more than just workbenches . .  just sayin'.

Andy, you moving to a more traditional woodworking style, that uses only hand tools, (other than a router  :D )

After using my new bench for the first project, I see the need for a revision. The tool well/plane stop gets to be a pain to raise or lower while tools are on the bench. I had to swap it twice while building the Walnut top. Empty tools, pull up out of slot, flip upside down and drop back in slot. No more of that now!! I cut a sliding ramp on both stringer slots, and installed a slide stop dowell pin. Now to raise or lower it, move 3-1/2" to right, and it drops to flush with top. Slide the other way, and it raises up 3/8" above top, and the dowell pin stops it in the up position . Really handy for me now!       Andy
