that large log moved easy ....just used my PINKY
just another beaver with a chainsaw &  it's never so bad that it couldn't get worse.

Pete J

I really like Log-Master.

I LOVE BACH and BAP! Or maybe BABCH and BABP.
Wood-Mizer and Baileys could sell them as BAOCH's and BAOP's.
I won't go down that PINK route.

This is FUN!

How about we name it in honor of the big-cheese. Da-BOSS

Captain

Is there not a bandmill out of Texas called the Logmaster?? :(

What about calling it the very thing that has destroyed many a peavey and cant hook, a pipe slid over the end...

"THE CHEATER BAR"

or getting back to simple machines "THE EQUALIZER"

New Cant Hook Evaluation update:

March 2, 2005
Logs used:
One 34" Red Oak and a 40" Hickory.

Evaluator:
Male - 5'2" 135 lbs

Cant hooks used:
Prototype Log Rite Cant Hook
Suggested Retail Price - $135.00 (LogRite)

1 48" standard Cant Hook
Suggested Retail Price - $59.00 (Baileys)

The first test was to see if the standard cant hook could be used to move the Red Oak log.

Although the picture is not that great you can see that this guy is struggling to even move this log. After numerous attempts we concluded that this log was simply not going to move with a standard hook. We even tried hammering in the hook to get a better bite to no avail.  The problem lies in the angle of the hook and the distance of the hook from the end of the cant hook. Had we been using video you would have seen Chad on his face in the mud once and on his but once.  Both times were from the hook peeling its way out of the log, thus loosing its grip and sending him to the ground.  Please note that it was not the length of the cant hook that was an issue.  Even though it was only 48" long the fact that the hook would not stay bedded into the log was the problem.  More length would not have made any difference with this standard hook design.

The second test was the same log with the New Log Rite  Cant Hook.

It took NO EFFORT to secure the hook into the log and roll this log one handed.  The improved hook angle coupled with more distance from the end of the pivot point of the handle permitted the hook to anchor itself without any effort.  The long handle simplified turning the log through simple physics.   The most noticeable feature was how well the hook would bite into the log.  You could simply rest the hook on the bark and begin to pull the handle and it would drive itself into the log.  That alone save time and energy when compared to hammering in the hook on the conventional cant hook.

The true test was on the Hickory Log.  After several attempt we gave up on the conventional cant hook because the hook simply would not stay into a log of this size.

The LogRite tool performed flawlessly.  As a veneer grade log measuring 10' long and a whopping 40" diameter the LogRite cant hook made this job both pleasant and relaxing.  With little effort this log was rolled.  In an attempt to compare what it would be like with a shorter handle the evaluator grabbed the handle at the 48" mark and was still able to move this log with no problem.  The added length of the new tool made it child's play! It should be noted that at NO TIME did we have to drive the hook into the log.  Just resting the hook on the log and then pivoting the handle in place offered the correct angle to start the hook into the log.  With a little pressure the hook simply drove itself deeper into the log.

Cost Analysis:

On the surface the LogRite tool is more than double the cost, however don't judge a book by the cover!
I charge $60.00 an hour to mill.  This includes the rolling logs onto the lifting hooks.  I have come across numerous logs of the size tested while cutting for customers. I have spent up-wards of 15-20 minutes using chains attached to the hydraulics on the mill to get the logs to roll onto the hooks because of a conventional cant hook not being able to grab the log.  Time is money.  Based on todays evaluation I find that had I had the LogRite Cant hook on the same job I would have saved myself 15 minutes of work on just one log.  This being the case it would take less than 5 problem logs to recoup the additional cost of the LogRite cant hook compared to the cost of the conventional cant hook.

More importantly is the LONG TERM savings generated with this tool.  I know I personally have cut up-wards of 50 logs that measured over 36" DIB.  If I was able to save 15 minutes on each of those logs by using this tool then I saved a minimum of $750.00 in time based on a $60.00 an hour rate.  Some folks may say there is no way it takes 15 minutes to load a problem log.  Fine, then lets say it only takes 7 1/2 minutes.  I am still $375.00 ahead on those same 50 logs.  Still not convinced?  If it only took you 3 minutes 45 seconds the time saved with the LogRite Cant Hook still saves you over $187.00, which is still $50.00 less than the original purchase price.

Recently I had a 44" White Oak that I spent over 30 minutes tring to get rolled to the hooks let alone onto the hooks.  The cost of this tool should be a no brainer.

Conclusion:

The prototype LogRite cant hook we evaluated proved to be the best cant hook I have ever used.  The balanced weight of the tool along with its superior hook angle design offers a major safety benefit when compared to conventional cant hooks.  Knowing the handle is not going to snap nor the hook let go is surely going to save a few knocks on the head and falls to the ground, which are common with conventional cant hooks.

I also believe that after confirming the time saved trying to manipulate large logs the tool may well be a small operators biggest production money maker.  As a single operator of our sawmill business this one tool saves me time.  Even on smaller logs this tool makes things easier and more efficient.  If I am able to save 15 minutes of time a day from moving logs more efficiently and I do that 5 days a week I have put money in my pocket.  In two weeks time I have paid for this tool with the money saved by not haveing to struggle with logs.

The other major benefit is that fact that more than likely you will never have to replce a handle.  This is another cost saving benefit that simply supports picking a LogRite tool over any other cant hook available on the market.

In closing I would like to thank LogRite for permitting me to evealuate this tool.  Its evident from our testing that this tool is going to be a big success.  It will be a standard "Must Have" tool for our milling operation from now on.

Congradulations LogRite!  You have my stamp of aproval, not that you realy needed it ;D

I think naming a big blue cant hook "Pinky" would be a cool thing ta do. :D Think about how many people that might walk by it if it had a fitting, normal name vrs how many people may stop by innitially to ask  PINKY?    WHY??

Bait da hook den real em in. ;D

Even on smaller logs this tool makes things easier and more efficient.

The smallest I tried it on was a 16" Hickory and you could move the log with one finger and I do mean A SINLGE FINGER!

Paschale

Was that single finger by chance, your pinky?   :D
Y'all can pronounce it "puh-SKOLLY"
