There is an old guy, dresses really funny, who has been going around to the local mills buying up all the white oak he can scrounge up in this area, said something about a big DIY boat project, shows up with different critters in his van each time.  I can give him your contact info if you want.
I doubt he's any more odd than some of the characters that come by here!  The woman that brought firewood lengths of cedar in her trunk comes to mind.   She collected them at the beach and hauled them 250 miles for me to saw into "boards".  She showed up in a business suit and heels after work.

White Oak is nice but I always love a whack of SYP.  Maybe because that is where most of my paychecks come from.

I'll be sawing 4X6's next week, one per log, but no side lumber.  All from Sweetgum.  ::)

I would think that would go pretty quick with no side lumber. Other than having to brush every one to get the grit off.

Yup, actual sawing time is probably less than 5 minutes including the setup and turning.  The log handling before the logs hit the sawmill is taking the majority of the time.

I'll have a brand new Debarker blade next week which should eliminate at least half of the brushing.  The log ends plus the exit side of the initial face opening should be all that has to be done.  I am counting ~75, 22' logs left to buck and saw.

The loader is being shared with the building construction so whenever lumber/plywood has to be handled, I do the waiting game.

When my tailgunner/loader leaves, I wait for a half hour or so until he returns.  ::)

I didn't get his last name but he said no need to be formal and call him Noach, Noah was fine.  Looks like his boat plans are written in stone, asked about buying a breeding pair of my Guineas, keeps looking at the sky and gets really nervous every time it rains.  I will get his number next time he is over. :P

Will that stuff peel out the bark? If your tailgunner on the loader runs a fork down the log on an angle just off lengthwise? I used to bark a lot of logs that way.... use the tip of the fork run along the log to gouge lengthwise then hit it again more from the front and if you get the angle right a lot of them almost roll right out of it, or at least with what I cut they will.

Ask him to have a play for ya... might take some pressure off the debarker if you can slip them out of their muddy jackets.

Oh no, this stuff was uprooted 6-9 months ago.  The bark is tight and the  embedded clay sand is "cement".  :-\

I have communicated with both my customer and my tailgunner this morning.  The weather forecast (rain) looks good for next week and I am anxious to finish this job.

What is remaining is ~75 ea. 22' logs that I will buck into 11' to be sawn into 4"X6" timbers.  There are also probably 8 ea. much larger 11' Red Oak logs that will be sawn into ½" and ¾" stock for door jam and trim work.   move_it

After fixing two blown hydraulic lines the sawmill was back up and running again today. I cut two really nice pieces of eastern white pine. One is 2 1/4" thick by 18" wide by 12'6" long with one square edge and one round/natural edge. and it is clear lumber no knots.
One is 4" thick x 18" wide by 12'6" long two square edges and clear on the top face. Both could be bar tops or other projects.

It's saturday... why fish when you can saw right? Or at least do the paperwork associated with a week of sawing :'(

Highlights of my week:

Queensland Maple, pretty much quarter sawn and showing clear straight grain.

And one of the run of 14" x 10" beams we cut this week. They're going to make some awful pretty shed posts for in house use, but hey... its a sawmill not a foundry, I couldnt see much point in buying steel. And I suspect with what these are sawn from they'll be there long after an I beam had rusted away.

I really need to hose out my floor huh? Mud season...

Those are some hefty burls there Tule Peak. Do I even want to know what a load like that costs?
