How wide of a slab can you do?
well,,we got out of the slab business last year and sold both big mills along with a fire sale of most of my big slabs.A pic of a pile of big walnut slabs.

So you changed from selling slabs to making and selling tables, correct?
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

4x6`s for me today too, here s`s 20 of the 46 ordered...

Magicman

4X6's for me also and with a few larger timbers up to 8X8.  I'll have to see how the rest of the week goes to know whether I will be back here next week.  I am suspecting that I will because there are several trees with white ribbons around them.

Pat and I went to a Mexican Restaurant tonight and my dish included grilled Tilapia and Shrimp.  A good ending for a successful sawing day.  food3

Didn't saw anything today but did get a call and did a site visit for a guy 22 miles away. He had a big cucumber tree (Magnolia) and a Catalpa he was planning on cutting down so I looked his site over and we agreed on a mill site and log staging location. He said he will plan on tax refund time for sawing then he gave me a tip to go talk to another neighbor on the way out. I stopped and rang the bell, a very pleasant and familiar looking young lady invited me in then her dad came out and we agreed we had met somewhere then it dawned on me he is a former customer I'd sawed some Paulonia for last summer. It was nice to see them and get such a warm welcome. The new customer had seen my name on a half page flyer I'd put out as a local community store so that seems to be working. Its very cheap advertising.

BTW - any gottcha's associated with cucumber (I assume it is like tulip poplar) or Catalpa? The Catalpa will have some large knots it appears.

Tule Peak, what is your plan with the big walnut logs you have since you don't have a big slabber anymore?

Home built bandsaw mill still trying find the owners manual!

Magicman

I reached a goal today.  Some may remember the two whacks of tree length logs that were on site when I arrived.

Seen here on the right.  Well over 200 logs each containing 2, 3, 4, and a few 5, 11' logs.

Both whacks are gone leaving a huge pile of slabs plus some timbers seen on the right.

Timbers were steadily being hauled off as needed on the buildings.

My loader seen in the background leaving again.  I am still having to share it with the building crew.

So what is left here for me to saw?  The city denied my customer's petition to burn the trees, etc. that were piled while clearing for the lake, so he wants as many of them sawn as possible.

These will all make 4x6's

And these will make larger timbers.  A couple will make 12X12's.  There are 3 Red Oak logs that will be sawn into ½" and ¾" for trim.

I can easily saw these two small whacks in two days so I have no idea whether I will be back next week.

In fairness the walnut pics posted on this thread are "old news". We cut , dried and sold individual and bulk loads of slabs until fall of 2018. One guy bought pretty much everything I had left for pennies on the dollar along with 3500 walnut cookies. What's next?? I'm going to Rentze, Georgia in April to see how a real sawmill operates and develop some new ideas, hopefully. Right now we can cut 34 inches wide and that will have to do moving forward. I'm telling my log suppliers nothing bigger than 36 inches. I still have acres of slabs in other species stacked up that haven't sold for years and need homes.

MM is there any way they could get more sand on those logs? Why don't they put sleepers under them?

WDH

I think that they must have done some experiments to find the best method to get the maximum amount of sand on those logs :)

I had plenty of sand heart failure on my first trip here.  Now I know that it will be there so we just brush and saw.  We sawed 21 4X6's this morning in 4 hours and I am still on the same blade that I sawed a couple of hours with yesterday so I am OK.  Three more 4X6's and then we will be sawing 8X8's and a couple of 12X12's.

Looks like about another 12-15 trees to come down so that will determine when I come back.

When all of these trees are gone I am supposed to move to another tract about 75 miles closer to home but those trees are still standing.

He will have to do something because the plumbers are working now on 4 more units which will take 16 ea of the 8's & 12's plus another 100 4X6's......help!!!

Great job MM, you make us proud.

Just had my end of year cleanout delivery, and yes of course I checked the PSI on the tires before loading and almost leaving the driveway...or the old jack and compressor finally got them to 80psi fully loaded, ha ha.  #NewbieFail

Actually Southside, I did try to give this job away when the customer first contacted me in January, 2018.  Jeff was visiting/hunting with me at the Cabin so I used him as a sounding board.  230 miles is much too far and he was saying over 100 logs!  :o  I called a fellow sawyer who lives within 50 miles of this job, left a message, but got no reply.  After I got pictures of the logs I finally talked myself into giving it a shot.  So far I have sawn the timbers for 10 condos with 60 more to go.  The plumbers are "roughing in" four units now for which no timbers have been sawn.

I ended up sawing 34 timbers today plus ½" Red Oak lumber from three logs.  Three more 8X8's tomorrow morning and then it will be back to chainsawing again.  Four trees will have to be bucked and brought out with the Sky Trac Loader.  I still do not know what the plans are for next week because those trees are still standing.  At least I will get a long weekend because I have a scheduled Dr. appointment Monday.  Just a semi-annual thing.

The 4 condos that are under construction that I just finished sawing for.

This is a completed (and occupied) condo.  12X12's and 6X12 on the lower porches and 8X8's and 4X8's on the top porches and 4X8 window headers.  8X8's, 4X8's, and 4X6's are used on the screened back porches.  There will be 70 of these.  :o

The sorta scary thing about long distance sawing is the thought of a mechanical failure.  I was sawing one further away than this and had an alternator failure.  Wood-Mizer sent a replacement overnight and I was sawing the next morning.  The good thing is that I am now far enough ahead that while a failure would not be welcome, it would not be a killer.
