What is proper way to tighten winch brake so it doesnt slip with big hitch on.85 230 tj eaton winch

You just adjust it as tight as you can while still able to pull the cable out in freespool. I usually just take a wrench in with me to get a hitch and play with it till it works good. If it has to be adjusted so it won't freespool easily in order for it to hold either your band or drum is worn out

I figured the top adjustment bolt is for the free spool and the bottom adjustment bolt is for the brake? Is that correct?

This is a Eaton or Hercules winch right? If so the top nut is adjustment the bottom is your set nut. You just loosen up the bottom a touch and then tighten up the top nut. A little adjustment goes a long ways but if you go to far and it won't freespool just back up the top nut and then tighten up the bottom nut

What about a broken spring, can't that have an effect on the hitch holding. The spring in the brake control housing.
