Band cuts a washboard

I saved up my metal strike bands until I had 15.  These were metal strikes that were not too bad.  Most left some metal curls on some of the teeth.  I used the edge of a file to scrape the curls off.  The teeth were not rounded off (any bands with rounded teeth, I scrapped those bands).  I sent the 15 for re-sharp at Woodmizer.  The first 5 or so in the pack seemed to cut ok (maybe they were replacements??).  Since those, I've gone through about 5 more bands and right off the bat they cut like a washboard.  The overall cut is flat, the average is flat.  They are leaving a fine washboard effect.  So I'm assuming that it's a set problem in some teeth.  If that's the case, then I don't understand why they didn't get re-set during re-sharp?  Anyone with any insight?  Sorry for no pic.  I forgot to snap one of the washboard.

Unless they ran the band through a de-setter, which WM does not offer for sale, so I am not sure they do such a thing, then there is no un-setting of any teeth which are overset due to the metal strike or in the event of a raker getting knocked out of whack.

Had the same thing happen myself so we built a de-setter device that goes onto the setter, few more tweaks to the system and will see what happens with it.

With the fine unnamed tailgunner that helps Southside, he needs such a device.  That unnamed assistant actually added some metal to a log last weekend.  There was a metal strike in a log and a handful of nails were located.  The smaller ones were dug out.  The unnamed assistant said "that's a 16 - maybe a 20 penny" and promptly disappeared to the tool shed returning with the cordless drill and a 1/8 inch bit.  He drilled around the nail and Southside pulled it.  A fresh blade was installed and on the next pass, metal was hit again..........the tip of the drillbit that the unnamed assistant left behind.  In his defense, he does show up.

I quit sending any metal strike blades to be resharpened.  They may very well cut OK, but they also may leave a pattern which is unsatisfactory for my sawing.

Customers have paid me $30 for nail strike blades so they are trashed and replaced with new.

Depends on ones application. I get lots of uses out of nail strike blades. Even sawing here at my house. I get a fair amount of my logs from tree surgeons. I keep some of the nail strike blades and resharpen them. Then when I get a log with that I have hit metal in, I will grab one of those blades to finish the log. If that blade leaves a few marks on the board, it doesn't matter once I dry it and plane it. Just have to make sure there isn't any metal left in the boards.

The de-setter device. I've tried to invent one but haven't figured it out yet.

I only sent in one set of blades to the local WM resharp service.  It took over 2 weeks and I don't think they did a good job.  I think a couple of those were metal strike blades.  I had a couple that were dragging a tooth.  It was so bent that I could see it when I looked after the first or second pass.

Here is a "de-setter" that I made from a couple of timing belt tensioner pulleys (they replace them when they do the timing belt).

The steel plate was something in my junk pile that had pins that fit the pulley just right.  Stick the blade in, snug it up and pull it through backwards.  Might have to snug it up more and make one more round.  Doesn't take all the set out but enough that it is less then what you are setting.  10 or 15 seconds per blade.
