Where is the temp sensor located?  It may not have had access to hot coolant.  Motor was staying cool according to a gauge on the dash or according to a temp gun reading?

I had though of this... I did not use a temp gun. The sensor is directly above the thermostat. Your right about it being in the colder water, but I find it hard to fathom that this machine has been running for the past 2 years I have had it and never "got hot" per say. Unless its just really good at keeping itself cool without radiator circulation...... Perhaps. Its kind of mystifying. Who knows. Hopefully I didn't cause any damage. It seems to be running perfectly and it goes 4 - 5 days a week now.

it is peculiar, i admit.  the coolant in the block will make steam pretty fast unless you have a really high radiator cap pressure... like 15 to 20 psi.. i dunno.  look at the overflow tube and tank for signs of being melted by steam.  if you had no circulation youre still gonna steam up and have pressure burping out somewhere.  maybe through a headgasket to the exhaust or crankcase breather.   or through the lower radiator hose to the radiator cap vent valve.  its gonna find its way out or explode a hose.  really swollen upper radiator hose around the clamps is a sure sign of long term high pressure.  


the IH with thermostat in backward would never warm up.. but its a tube style open center stat so itll flow 100% with no holdback like having none.  when flipped it warms right up.  i dont think i have ever had a stuck thermostat.  maybe 20 years ago.

 When I first got the landini the temp gauge never got much over the bottom of the cold line. I never used a temp gun on it, but when it warmed up you can hear the engine smooth out and run better. I did have to change the thermostat at about 3k hrs and after that the gauge on the dash never worked at all, but it still smooths out when it warms up to operative temp. It's a stupid thermostat set up with 2 inflows an one exit to rad, and the thermostat moves in two directions depending on which inflow it using.
