If you do a search for "Hydraulics Anywhere" on here you will find a couple of threads. Basically hooking up a second battery to the hydraulic box will give you the ability to run your hydraulics with the head off the contact strip. It's a real time saving modification and easy to do.

Another thing to remember about your hydraulics is if you are using them while the head is moving along the power strip you are causing arcing and will get burned/dead spots and when you have the head resting on one of these dead spots, your hydraulics won't work. (Don't ask me how I found this out ::)). You either have to sand off the dead spot or move the head forward or back to make a live connection to continue use of your hydraulics.

Disconnect?  I should say not!  If a sawyer shows up out here wearing a War Eagle shirt, he'd be well advised to keep the engine running in case the neighbors find out and come rolling up!!

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

Yeah I definitely want to be able to hook up and go at the end of the day so I have made sure to leave myself a path of escape! As far as direction of waste and finished, I have tried both but now that you say finished off the front that does seem to make more sense.

As for operating the hydraulics while the head is moving, that is good to know.
