Son Chris spent a year in Montana guiding campers, fishermen, and hunters.  He always got a better tip if the saw grizzly bear. ;)  One of the first guide tricks he picked up was to spot some droppings on the trail or around a campsite and proclaimed them to be from a black bear.  The tenderfoots would most always ask how you could tell black bear droppings from grizzly bear.  He say,  "Well,  Grizzly dropping usually contain things like belt buckles,  buttons, and eyeglass frames and such in it."  :o

Another standing joke was.. Without fail, every woman on a trip would ask if there were restrooms along the way and at the campsite.  :-[ Chris would always truthfully reply; "Yes,  they are everywhere you're likely to need one." ::)

I hunt deer, elk, birds, and anything else I can get a tag for here in Montana. I'm 63 now and don't hunt as hard as I used to. But have just as much fun.

Interesting how these old threads crop back to life.

I grew up hunting  small game like squirrels, rabbits then coon, doves, woodcock, wood ducks in N. Fla, then deer and even turkey. I still hunt deer and every year or so I'll go listen and talk to a few turkeys and once in a while I'll shoot one of them. I'm a meat hunter and the only attraction for shooting a large buck would be more meat on it.

I mostly just harvest a deer or two for us to eat out of established hunting houses with feeders. I worked and vacationed in Africa and the Amazon and loved seeing the big game but never had any desire to shoot any of the big game there or out west or Alaska where we also visited. I would love to have had my .22 to shoot some wild guinea fowl or Francolins and maybe even a dikdik or two in Africa but shooting a cape buffalo would be like harvesting a black angus cow for me.

I don't begrudge the big game hunters in Africa their trophies as they bring a lot of money to the local economies, the meat typically goes to the local villagers and the trophies they like are already past prime breeding age and have been ousted as the head of their harems of cows. They do little, if any, actual damage to the wildlife populations there.

Hunting jaguars or such in the Amazon or tigers in Asia and such is very distasteful to me unless they were a threat to personnel.

Bibby,

We have a friend who was a local river guide when younger. He had one client after a rough ride over some whitewater ask if he'd ever had anyone hurt or if  they'd been sued and if he was liable. He replied "I'll have to talk to my favorite uncle about that as he is the local judge."

I would think anybody who cuts wood from logs would also hunt.

Grew up hunting phesants, sadly at the end of their prime here in Mi. Always had labs, up to 3 in the house, life was fun, never a dull moment with the dogs around.
Switched over to rabbits, had 2 Bassets for a while...got back into pheasnts, went to South Dakota for about 10 years, trips of a lifetime there.
Hardcore deer hunting for a while, not so much anymore.

As ones property ages and adjioning land changes it affects ones choice of game...the off gridders next to the farm have ruined the deer hunting with fences and over agressive dogs.
Still have 4 acres of beyond perfect rabbitat...our current rabbit hunting is beyond belief. The neighbor and l try our best to make sure it stays that way.

I have a lot of drive to hunt JUST up to the point of what we can eat before it spoils.  Same with the garden.

When theres no room to put another cucumber or shoulder i am ready to do other things!   If someone gives me a deer my season is over. Im not gonna shoot something just to have it go to waste or drive around looking for someone who wants it.
