Brandi,

Glad you had a good helper and a good time. I am finding these days my help is much more likely to be in their 60's and 70's than to be in their teens or 20's. That's a sad state of affairs IMHO. Glad y'all had a good meal and good time afterwards.

@Bindian I was in Lafayette and saw that I was only 3 hours from you, but you would have been off the path home.  I would love to meet you some day.
Doc,
Maybe 3.5 hours. Google maps says 3 hours 40 minutes, but I was a little speed demon.  I used to work 7 on and 7 off in New Iberia right down the road the south.   It was 4 hours from the hangar to home.  I had a 1978 Audi Fox GTI then and would scream down I-10 at 75 mph getting 36 mpg.
Prettiest drive I ever took was highway (I think) 90 along Bayou Black down from New Iberia  down to Air Logistics' Houma and New Orleans field bases for TDY.

Why off the path?  You could of took I-45 north into Dallas to hit I-35 and go on up thru OK City on into Wichita. Shoot, it is really a straight shot north up to you.

Howard,
So true.  I  told her I might be sawing full size 2x6s 20 foot long.  She said if I need help to call her.  That I will.  I hate dragging the 20 footers off the mill and onto the pallet.

well next time, if I am invited.  we were traveling with another couple (two cars) but i would never want to just drop in, but next time i will plan better.  We already had two family stops on the way home with family.  the first in Shreveport meant we were already north, then Dallas then home.  Thanks for seeming to be open for a meet and greet someday.  i look forward to that.  I did not figure out how close we were till the day before we left, and that was race day for the ladies.  my wife Georgia, and her classmate Suzanne.  her husband mike and I just try food and beer, and try to do what we are told (not so good at it).  no pic of me and Mike, cause we are too pretty!   :o   :)

Piece of Old growth Western Red Cedar taken off the beach. I flat sawed it 7/8 of a inch so my brother can cut edge grain 1/4 inch strips off the boards to make a rowing skull for his Wife.Amazing the wood you can recover from something that looks like it should go in the burn pile.

Nice, but I have a question about your setup...
Does sawing sideways (like in your second pic) keep the blade cleaner and sawdust off the Cant?

Drove 28 miles to saw for a 77 y/o customer. He had a bunch of small RO logs he wanted cut into 4/4 boards to re-floor a hog pen. I sandwiched him in because it was a one day job not too far from home.

Most were a scant 8' long with 3-4 12' logs in the mix. Many only returned about 35-50 bf. No huge production job but the customer was good help and kept the boards leaving and the logs coming. We finished before 4:00 pm and it had warmed up to nearly shirt sleeves kind of weather.

About 130 bf of 12' and a few 6' boards on top.

 A little over 700 bf of 8' 4/4 boards.

Total for the job was about 950 bf and my minimum covers first 1,000 bf so he just paid the minimum fee and mileage. A nice customer and I found I knew his brother who I like real well.

On the way home 11 miles from today's customer I stopped and set the mill up for tomorrow's job. It is time for my 1100 hour service but I did not have my manual/checklist with me so I'll try to squeeze it in tomorrow during or at the end of the day. Every thing is running good and that is just lubing and checking the mill.

Tomorrow's logs. I figure 2 days due to the size of the several of them. RO & WO logs.

I did not take a pic but had a 30 something y/o construction company owner bring me 3 cottonwood logs, he est. to be 28 inches diam and 12 feet long.  I walked around them several times with a tape.  they were 44 to 48 inches diam.  had an area in the center with swoop 12 inches up off the bed of the trailer.  why did they not roll on their side you ask?  Cause these were not logs, and all the branches held them in place.  Oh, and they had lay in the field for a year, where they had caught on fire, and 1/2 a side of each log was charred.  And one that was 48 inches wide at one end, was also 48 on the other end, but at a 90° twist relative to the other end.  I had quoted him 100 bucks an hour plus blades.  i thought I could knock out the 3 logs (as described) in a few hours, but told him these could take a whole day, and the lumber would be crap.  he wanted it for paneling inside a horse barn.   i offered to give him one of my CW logs for free if he wanted to pay the sawing.  I made sure these were not sentimental for some reason and they were not.  He was going to build a barn and the wood was to be for inside paneling.  He said he had logs milled in the past.  I think he was just excited.  I sent him home with his "logs" and all his money.

Olcowhand,
I check in to the Forestry Forum just about every day but seldom post comments and pictures are a struggle. So if I get them where I post I'm happy. I'll work on orientation
Dan

@Dan R No worries, and I apologize if you saw my attempt at humor as something else. I was playing off of a reply in this thread not long ago where the poster had a pic of a stack posted sideways, and he said something like he told the customer that the wood dries faster when it's stacked on the edge....
Anyway, please continue to post these excellent pics and replies, and I'll keep my humor to myself....

Dan, after you upload the picture click on it to enlarge it. You will then have the option to rotate it left or right, sometimes my phone will turn them when I uploaded, so what started off right is suddenly 90 degrees out of orientation. Gotta love smart technology.

Posting the occasional photo "sideways" is like sawing into a metal part of your sawmill.  There are those who have, there are those who haven't YET, and those who...... well, aren't forthcoming with the facts.

Keep posting the photos and your sawing.  We have some members who are from the Southern Hemisphere and I can't imagine how they have to rotate their photos to get them right here.

I learned early in life about the embarrassment of getting something wrong.  Back in high school, I showed rabbits at the Houston Livestock Show.  Dad & I read the rule book thoroughly and realized my pen of meat rabbits (bred for our FFA show Fryer class) could be shown in the new Pre Junior Buck and Doe class.
I was the only person that entered that class of Pre Junior rabbits.  So when I found out I won first place, I was pleased.  But I should have got 2nd and 3rd also.  But these two rabbits were disqualified as being entered in the wrong sex class.  Dad had miss sexed these bunnies!  So basically I got first place by just showing up with the right sex in the right class.

So I got 2nd place with the 3 Fryers at my FFA show and sold them at our charity auction for $600.  Bitter and Sweet.

Thanks @doc henderson , but I am going to back off my observational humor- and if @Dan R never posts another pic it's all my fault.
All this discussion about mistakes during posts gets me back to the old saying that the only person who doesn't make mistakes is the guy that's not trying or contributing. I'm humble enough to realize that I get a lot of good info from the good folks on this Forum, but rarely contribute. That alone should stifle my impulse to comment on someone else's otherwise productive contribution. I pride myself on being an "Encourager" to anyone who posts or replies in a thoughtful, enthusiastic manner, and I fell short.
My apology was sincere, and that comes with an implied commitment to do better in the future....

@olcowhand those of us that know you understand that it was in jest, and in addition to being kind, and funny, also humble.  Proud to know you can call you a friend, and that is why I made the comment I did.  it is easy to mistake comments in text in the wrong fashion.  throw a smiley at the end, and keep making your comments and jokes, all in fun.  we got you.  my medical humor has sent me to the woodshed a time or two, and I think in person it would have come across in a better light.  God bless sir!

No pictures, no tally, no mill. We met and started sawing promptly at 7:30 a.m and finished sawing the last log after 5:00 pm. Tried to tally but it was too dark. I was going to load up and bring the mill home but decided it is better to just wait till tomorrow. I'll meet the customer at 10:00 a.m. We had a good day and pretty lumber except some knotty, long dead white oak that was very uncooperative. I'll get pictures tomorrow.

I did stop at the convenience store to get my weekly trader paper and a couple of guys saw my sign on my door and seemed real interested about some cribbing. Evidently they are working on houses in the area and were looking for a source. I told them I can cut whatever they need. In fact my customer/partner had bunch of large short butt log cuts and we talked about cutting them. I told him not to waste them. I will see if these people call back. I gave them a couple of cards. The door sign on my truck gets me a lot of inquiries. My $10/month service ad in the trader paper is my most dependable source of advertising. I always keep plenty of business cards and hand them out freely and often.

Howard,
When Y'all have a sign on your vehicle, do Y'all have to have commerical insurance?
I was told by a friend and co worker (before retirement), who had a stump grinding business.  He had a magnetic sign on his truck, but took it off because his agent told him, if he had an accident and it was reported he had a sign on the door at the time of the accident, his insurance would NOT pay because it was a commercial vehicle.  Anyone heard of that?  I never checked out it, as I wanted a mag. sign.
