Baby cant hook

I picked up this li'l cant hook long ago at a flea market. Any idea what it was used for? Top hook is a normal size for comparison. Sorry for the confusion. For me posting a pic here is like eating glass.

Just a guess but maybe used by one seriously rugged individual rolling cants on a mill.

Now I only use Logrites. The short 2' cant hook's replacement is seen on the bottom. I now have added a 3' shortie so I need to update my cant hook picture. ;D

The shorties are useful for the tailgunner to quickly flip a small cant on the sawmill.

On a sawmill with a carriage and no log turner [a manual sawmill] that is what you turn with. You never use any cant hook bigger than needed and you need an old fashioned small diameter handle especially if you wear gloves. I have seen them as short as 16" for turning eastern cedar. I once put alot of hours on these tools. these 'roll on' cant hooks are still made.

I have one that size that I use all the time. As was mentioned it is very handy for turning cants.
My has a permanent spot under my LT30.
The hook configuration is better than any of my other cant hooks.It grabs the first time ,every time.

I picked this small can't hook up at an antique store in NH back a few years, they had 2 the same but one had issues so was left.

This is 24" long and good for light logs like eastern white cedar, also smaller sized log / cant.

Newer 30" cant hook takes a little larger log / cant

That's a nice one. Does anybody still make that exact style scale stick? I used to get them from Mill supply [Chase] and then Bruce Dexter. I think someone in New England was making them.

I've enjoyed all the info. MagicMan's hook looks like it make be from the same maker as mine. Tiny forged hook with a detailed point, oversized hoop and tiny foot with no real shoe. I think I've seen that hoop pattern on full sized hooks before so it would maybe i.d. the maker.

Armed with the info that the hook I have isn't some real rarity I believe I'll make a new handle for it and put it to use. The existing handle is cracked, dried out and seriously worn from turning [no shoe syndrome] and I expect it would break pretty easy even for a puny old man such as myself.

But being a sucker for history I'll keep the old handle for posterity should some one ever want to "restore" it.

My Magic Hooks are made from two different broken logging tongs.

I split the eyes on both of them to add the rings.

Today I saw a picture of what appeared to be an old company ad, manufacturer unknown, that showed their cant hook offerings. Not the whole tool just the hooks. They had 12 styles including 6 or so different sizes ranging from 6.25" to 11.25 " measured between the hole and the longest point of the hook. The little one shown I asked about has a length of 7.25" so some where out there are likely some seriously tiny hooks.

The ad was really interesting piece of history I thought and I apologize for not trying to figure out if I could capture and pass it along. They were sold by the dozen.
