Good Day,

I have some Kasco 4 degree blades that I would like to sharpen on by Viel Tools Sharpener (https://www.vieltools.com/produit/affuteuse-de-lame-de-scie-a-ruban-viel-1503)

This takes a different wheel than the woodmizer i believe. It is a 4" wheel, although a 5" wheel would probably fit. Who would I talk to to have one made to match my Kasco blade.

I have been trying to message Cutting Edge but the messages are just sitting in my outbox.

Thanks,

Unfortunately, Viel's Sharpener is a DRY grinder.  CBN coated tooling HAS to have coolant and alot of it.

Without coolant the CBN coating becomes clogged with grindings/particulate and eventually will cause the coating to become ineffective, burn/overheat the teeth and become unusable.

So for anyone reading this information... Consider the above before purchase.

Hope this helps

Why do dry CBN chainsaw grinding wheels work so well?
Too many irons in the fire

Could he douse it occasionally with a spray bottle of wd40? Life might be reduced but still acceptable for the job.

I have done some research on this
There are many cbn wheels in lots of industries used dry.

I have a CBN wheel that I use dry to sharpen wood lathe tools. When the CBN wheels came on the scene for woodturning we were told that genuine diamond wheels would burn without lube but there is something about the CBN that reduces it's tendency to burn when used dry.

They are said to load up when used with softer steels - some people say not to use them with carbon steel tools but tool steel or better is OK. I don't know where bandsaw blades fall in that spectrum. I know I have used mine to touch up some carbon steel tools on occasion and it has not seem to reduce it's effectiveness on the tool steel.

One of the woodturning tool suppliers (woodturnerswonders.com) who has sold a lot of CBN wheels for sharpening just came out with chainsaw sharpening wheels in CBN.

So Cuttting Edge will not make a wheel for it. That is his decision and I am ok with that. Anyone else make custom wheels. Or I could try make a 5" woodmizer wheel fit. Anyone else on the forum have a sharpener from Viel?

Another question. If I cannot find a wheel to fit i may be able to use my existing wheel. Does the entire gullet and tooth back need to be sharpened or can you just sharpen the tooth back?

You will find the life of the blade decreases from not sharpening the gullet. The reasoning being that micro cracks form in the gullet, by sharpening you remove those starter cracks.

I've been looking into sharpeners recently.  Does this mean that the Viel cannot be used to sharpen Kasco blades?  I recently got some 7 deg blades from them and I like them.
