I think that would be good.  I was thinking of making it hook over the bevel and then go back behind the clamp with an upright piece with a secondary cleat or bevel on it.  like a wide Z.  I will post it if and when I make it.  I want it easy to add and remove as I saw.  then clamping would keep it tight.

The two biggest things I need to address are the clamp and the backstops down low of some spike to hold the logs in. I've thought of several different things on both

doc henderson

I wish the TK log stops had the rollers as they tend to catch on the log if you are tight and try to lower, or the log catches as you try to roll it.

Even with rollers, they will sometime catch on odd shaped logs.  I had it to happen while turning a log last week.  I need a piece of pipe, etc. to fit over the side support to add height while turning and then remove it after the log is situated.

as usual, you have great ideas MM.  I will remember that!

I guess I don't understand the problem with the clamp horizontal travel.  Sure it would be nice to have a couple more inches of travel, especially towards the log stops but not that important with the way I saw.

On the other hand, the clamp vertical travel was a huge problem for a lazy person like myself.  I modified and put in a 12" cylinder.  That lets me slide live edge 10/4 slabs off the log without moving from the console.  Also when grade sawing it lets me stand up big flitches against the cant to edge.

One example is crotches laying flat against the backstops and a couple stumps. In every instance I could have used  three to four inches. Had to re position and cut off on each side to get the carriage through. I know I'm a little wider through the throat than you guys by a few inches but I don't know if the clamp is the same. I did ask them on the 2020 if the frame was wider on it and clamp. Matt said yes.

always trying to get the most from equipment.  I only occasionally want a little wider clamp area, like for cutting cookies.  some logs are as wide as the mill, and i like to clamp across the center/widest area.  may try to make a double duty adapter, that can make the clamp area wider, or narrower.  the skinny board can be clamped by adding a spacer board.  for edging, it is nice to protect the face of the board being edged as well.
Larry, how do you use the taller clamp to remove slabs from the log?

I was trying to collect some of the smaller parts of this cherry this morning when my battery blew up.  I didn't get any of it, but we are going to try to get the big log tomorrow with a skid steer.  We are going to drive the steer on lumber to avoid sinking.  I calculate this little 36" diameter and 9' long at about 3000lbs.  I sure hope we manage to get it.

Yes, I forgot about cookies.  I go a year without cutting one than I have a run on them.  Always wanted to make something to extend the clamp range than I forget.

When I saw live edge slabs I saw about 1/3 to 1/2 way down the log.  Than I put the clamp under the log back by the log stops.  Lift the log and the slabs slide off into the loader arms or onto the forklift forks.

If you round off the flat piece of metal that the chain bolt attaches to your problem will be solved or will definitely help.  It's catching on the squared off pieces. The log clamp can have a extension that slides over the existing clamp that could be one size or expandable.

doc henderson

you are correct WB, and I had considered that, but it does not happen enough to get me to do that.  but with your advice, I think I will do that.
Larry, I guess I thought you were saying you could lift the slabs off the top of the cant and move them, and I could not figure how.  I may look to see if more throw will help me too.  thanks.

Mixed bag at the mill today. Hopefully spalted maple and hopefully not spalted cherry.

Finally finished a job yesterday that I began in December of last year.  We had some weather delays as well as waiting for the customer to skid more logs.  This is all for the first phase of the customer's home renovation so I will be back later for 'round two'.  This included about every dimension imaginable from ¾" X 6" up to 6" X 12" & 12" X 12" timbers.  The majority of the logs were Red Oak with some White Oak for flooring and SYP for framing lumber.

There were even six 3" X 22" bookmatched pieces for tables.  Total was 15,277 bf.

Yesterday afternoon my LubeMizer quit squirting and of all things, I still had a 24" X 16' Ash log to saw.  Not good and I had to clean the blade with Diesel after practically every cut.  I checked the fuses and breakers which were OK.

So this morning I went "fishing" and sure enough the pump was the problem.  I had one on the shelf, so the LubeMizer is happy again.  I'll crack the non-working pump open to determine whether the pressure switch or the motor failed.  I also have a donor pump with a broken barb so I should be able to put this one back on the shelf as a spare.

I'll be sawing 1X12 SYP for B&B siding Friday.  He also needs 20' 6" trailer decking so it may be a long day.

Anyway I am off for the rest of today and tomorrow.  :)

Well, we managed to get that big cherry loaded.  It was not easy, but managed to keep damage to the yard a minimum which is a feat this time of year.  We used plywood under the skid steer tires at all times.
My plan is to chainsaw cut this thing into quarters on the trailer

 and then quarter saw it.

Some of the 20+ year old down trees are going to be a flatbed that can be taken off of the log trailer 2  2"x10" by 12' main frame. Black gold for everything!

I wish we had a load of good 12' and 16' cypress logs.  We've had several requests this week.  I hate to saw 16' boards out of logs that will yield a lot more lumber when bucked to 8'.  Ironically enough, no one has called for 8' cypress lately.  We sawed a little cypress a few weeks ago and the customer sent me pics.

One of the logs we sawed was really good.  I hated to cut it into fence boards but that is what we had.

I started a job this morning for a many times repeat customer.  We finished sawing the 16' SYP logs by noon and they produced 1360 bf of 1X6, 1X9, and 1X12 lumber.

For B&B siding on this cabin that the customer is building with framing lumber that Luke and I sawed.

Here my tailgunners are sliding 1X12's from the sawmill onto the JD forks as my customer watches.  The tailgunner seen in the center did not last but 1½ logs before he "calf roped" and left the job.  ::)  That first log yielded 19, 1X12's, 2, 1X9's & 3' 1X6's.  smiley_thumbsup

After we finished sawing the SYP, we got the 20' Oak sawed with the exception of the closest two shown here.  We have rain forecast through Thursday so I will return next Friday and complete this job.  The Oak is being sawn into 2X6's & 2X8's for trailer decking and a corral.

Those are some nice logs, MM.  Concretus erectus = Transmissionous electra.

Hickory to start the day at 8 (we have to keep the neighbors happy, so no sawing before 8).  Live oak today and live oak customer tomorrow.  It's a hard life, at least on the Janka scale.

The logs that were supposed to be hickory turned out to be something else.  They seemed to resemble Chinaberry a lot.   If they were Chinaberry, they were the biggest I've seen.  They sawed flat and relatively easy.

Afterwards, we sawed a few decent cedar logs with some blades that had previously run into metal.  Two did not perform well but the last one cut like a ninja.  John left at 10 to do his

due diligence as a daddy and baseball coach but most of the work was done.

Boxwood Elder is one log that definitely looks better than it smells. 😂.  Had to do some adjustments on my blade guide rollers and replace a hydraulic pump because of in and out play in the shaft letting it go into the pump so far that it was leaking around the seal and getting my motor full of fluid. Had this one small log laying around that had blown over. Sawed it up being I was needing to try everything out after the maintenance work.
