Looks like some nice logs there Nebraska.  Is the project repair work from the storm or adding on?

I decided to finish up this spruce I recently got from my next door neighbor. A couple looked more like fence posts.

I sawed it for my composting toilet sheds and got 3/4" siding, 8/4 framing and 1/2" battens. I even saved several 2X2 edgings as I can use it on making the doors so there was not a lot of waste.

With yesterday's sawing I have enough on hand for more than 3 sheds and framing for about one.

I guess this band is probably not going to make it to resharp is it? ::) I could feel it was struggling but I was going to finish that last cut of 3/4" X 8" wide siding and probably edge the 3 last 8/4 flitches. First time I ever had one break into multiple pieces. I figure if it was that far gone it likely would have broken after the next sharpening anyway.

Congrats on the two-for-one blade.  :o

I had one that broke into three pieces that we found anyway.  One piece was not much larger than a quarter and landed at the bystander's feet.  There is a picture of it on here somewhere but I ain't looking today.

 Cjross73,
I'm intrigued by your backhoe.  I see 6 hoses on the stinger.  I figure two for the bucket and two for the thumb.  It doesn't seem to be an "extenda hoe" - so what are the other two hoses for?

Guessing the hydraulics are for attachments like a breaker hammer, plate compactor, flail mower, etc.

Just cleaning up around the yard a bit and to fill a small order for 20 poplar 2X4X8. The first 2 logs were off the top of a tree I cut yesterday and the other was from several I cut last Fall.

More from last Fall. Even the 4' made 3 short 2X4s I'll use on my outhouse builds so not much waste.

Order filled on the end and a few 2X4, 2X2 and 1X4 on the other end and shorties underneath. About 191 bf when all said and done.

My son came over and we got two big loads of walnut from a friend 8-9 miles away. No pix yet but I'll try to get some tomorrow. Lots were small and will only make bench legs and such but several really pretty butt logs He warned me to watch the sides next to his house as his dad used to shoot squirrels out of them. Should not be much below the sap wood.

A week ago the WM service team came and did a complete factory alignment on my mill. One of the first things they found was my debarker only has one tooth left. I should have just told them "Well, this is WV."

I guess I better get another one of those.

Oh Wow, I should have retired sooner.  ::)  I just looked at a job that I will begin sawing sometime in May.  Forty 16' logs; that measured 16" to 28" top end with the average easily being 22".

I saw these when I drove up.

This is the second whack that I saw and it got better.  :o

Yup I rounded the curve and...

Yikes!!  That is approximately 14Mbf to be sawn into mostly framing lumber with some 1X10 siding.

This customer was referred to me by the customer that I just sawed over 21Mbf for.

MM,
I'm assuming that is your SYP that you are always slicing up.  Regarding the light center and darker outer layer - How long does a log have to sit to get like that?  What will the resulting boards look like - blue stain?  If stained, does it go into what appears to be untouched center?

The lighter colored center is actually the darkest portion of the log end.  The outside sapwood is normally much lighter colored and is richer with pitch so the sugars are responding to being exposed to oxygen and growing mildew.  There should not be any 'blue stain" here, but it does not matter either way.

Rejoining is not a problem, it's paying the dues with my tired old self.  smiley_old_guy

This is surely among the best quality logs that I have ever seen.  I did not see knotty nor off pith centered logs so they should saw very well.  They are also clean.  :)

Those are great logs, MM.  You are going to make some tail gunners earn their keep when you start sawing those.

I will definitely be excited to dig into them but I have to finish the job that I stopped before the Project.  The customer works in the New Mexico "Oil Patch" 2 weeks on and two weeks off.  He will be back in on the 19th and maybe we can finish him this time.  After that, I have a couple of 1-2 day jobs to saw.

Thankfully my customers are very patient and they all know that when I do get there, I am theirs until all of their logs are sawn.   If we have to skip a week or whatever the sawmill stays there until we are done.  :)

Been sawing 1x12s again for bee hives.  I now have 3 bee hive customers.

I now have two customers bringing me logs.  Here are his 14 foot 2x6s.

I had my taxes done two weeks ago.  My CPA said there is no charge.  My jaw dropped.  He then said he wanted my scraps and slabs to build his kids a fort and start their chicken coop.
He was flabbergasted when I gave him this pile...........

I took the backhoe off of my tractor so I could use the landplane in helping out with the sawmill shed pad.  But I miss the weight of the backhoe.  I don't like curling a log off of a trailer and getting that "my butt is floating" feeling.

So I cut a Red oak down to 9 feet and squared in up to a 15 inch square.  My calculations and the seat of my pants say the landplane now weighs about what the backhoe does.

Do Y'all think the shipping straps will keep tight enough so the cant doesn't move?  At first I was going to use ratchet straps, but those always need tightening in our damp air.

I think they'll hold. The polyester strapping is pretty tough. It's what I just got for my mill. My hoe weighs 2,000 pounds. I have to be very careful without it on, even with other implements on. I was going to put a weight bracket off a tractor on my box blade, but suitcase weights are $1-1.50 a pound these days.

Short chain with a chain binder would hold it too, I'd think.

Estimate the red oak timber about 170 bdft weighs 800 - 900 lbs.

Notch out the timber at the ends so it cannot slip sideways should help to fasten it down too.
