Yeah, I just called him and told him he needed to find or rent a longer trailer. U-haul rents a 12' utility trailer for about $30/day which is what I suggested to him. He has about a 4 mile trip but some of it is steep!

Sure is going to be hard to catch up with the MM at this rate. (I'll either have to break one of his legs or his ride along seat to slow him down.) I sawed these 2 - 14' long poplar tops as part of an order I have. I got 168 bf including 7 - 2X8s and a couple of 2X6s. Finished the 2X8s, need  5 more 2X6 (I probably have that many in stock if I wanted to dig them out) and a dozen 2X4X14 to finish the order. I have a 13'11" log to finish the 2X6s which only need to be 12' long and I'll stretch an extra inch out of the bevel on the cut if I can and that should about finish the order. If not one more tree will do it.
SYP will be an endangered species in the South soon if MM keeps that up  8).  Have you heard of the Mojave Forest?  Yup, that was before @Magicman got his Woodmizer.

Along these lines, yesterday I made a rough "in the head" estimate of my board feet sawed this year and got to wondering how close I actually was, soooo I pulled my invoices this morning.

The actual number is 74,556 bf

Of course I do not scale nor charge for stickers, 4X4's to stack on, nor boards that have wane.

If you would show a little initiative, you might make 200mbf this year! ;) :D  Amazing work!

I say this all with due respect and love in my heart when I tell you Lynn that if your goal was to cut back this year, you kind of suck at it. ;D
As for passing the bigger jobs along, you ain't so good at that either. :D

Well I did/have passed all of the jobs over ~50 miles to another sawyer.  These latest biguns just happen to be close.  What can I say??

Funny thing is that the customer that I sawed over 21Mbf for already has about 40 more logs waiting for me.  That plus the customer that I sawed over 14Mbf for has another 8Mbf waiting for me to get there.

I am down to only 12 more names on the list.  I have no plans to saw this nor next week because da sawmill is in "dry dock".  :D

After 3 days of rain, I had to adjust the power feed belt.  Had it all adjusted and tightened the bolts with my 1/4 inch drive cordless ratchet.  I always give a torque check with an open end wrench.  The top bolt felt "squishy".  I carefully removed it to see this....

Yes it is barely in one piece.  So after over 2 years of not turning wrenches for a living......................I still got it. 8)
Bad thing is..........my old can of lawnmower bolts is starting to get shy of 1/4-20 bolts. :(

Brandi,

TSC and Rural King can help you with that bolt supply problem.

I recently found that they (TSC) make a good pair of canvas work pants at a very reasonable price too. (Well, for men anyway - I did not check out the ladies selections as I did not want to be considered less than masculine by shopping on that side. Also they did not have a handy place for me to leave my purse while I was shopping. ;) )

Got a call from a potential customer this morning saying he needs some 2X4s and said he could use some 6' long so I told him I'd saw up this 6' log off the big double poplar I had posted about earlier - the cut below this was the one too big for me to get to the mill. I cut it up and got 29 - 2X4s, a 2X6 and some side lumber of 2X2 strips and 4/4 boards.

I sawed a couple of these tiny 6' tops and even one 5' and got 2-3 -2X4s out of each for stock. I can use small stuff like that on my composting toilets.

I sawed these 2- 8' tops and got 6 2X4 for stock or sale (All my stock is for sale if a customer needs/wants it). 188 bf out of all but nearly all from the first log.

The 6' mostly all 2X4s

 The 8' 2X4s and 4/4 side lumber and 5' 2X4s

I now try to save 2X2 strips to use for doors and window framing in my little sheds and toilets. I had a stock built up then a customer came and bought them all so I had to start my stockpile over again.

Anyway the yard is a little cleaner now.

Thanks for directing me to where I can get more 1/4-20 bolts.  Thought I was gonna have to tear down another lawnmower. ::)  Please pick a selection up for me next time you are there and mail them to me. oz_smiley

I have done that before.  But I have plenty of 3/4 inch bolts.  It's the 1.25 inch bolts I am short of.

Brandi,

Thanks for the fashion advice but canvas is much cooler and lighter and more flexible for work pants anyway.

I'll be sure to pick up your extra bolts on my next trip to town so you don't have have to take another mower apart.

I had two 'not so big' jobs to get done on the mill today (I/we only got one done) one was 3" pine slabs for a 32' bar top, the other was hemlock 2xsomething for raised beds. The 16' pine log was already on the loader arms, about 32" diameter, but I had told Bill what ever hemlock he picked out for the raised beds he should make obvious, because we have logs all over and hemlock is everywhere.
SO as I pulled into the slot that led to the mill/log yard I saw this (you gotta look close):

Now you would have to have good resolution on your screen and really focus to see it, but he left me a 'hint', such as he does sometimes. If you can't see it, I don't fault you, even in person I had to focus a little; SO I took that photo and highlighted it a bit so you can see what I saw.

SO I am guessing this was the 12 footer he wanted me to use for the raised beds. :D At least I think so.

Anyway, rain was coming in and I wanted to get the bar tops done but handling 16' x 3" slabs is rough for an old guy alone. I got it started and took off a 2" flitch after the opening cut and one slab, then did a 180° flip (with a dumb move, described elsewhere if I overcome my embarrassment) and about that time Bill showed up to help, so he ran the mill and I cut the junk up and tailgunned. Because of the unique use for these, the stickered them right on the mill bed and will try to get the client over in the morning to decide if he wants us to straight line one edge or put them out to dry for a while and figure it out later.
I buttoned up and headed home to set a burn in the swamp, a good day with the rain coming. in.

I sawed about 20 logs of white birch this month. These were cut over the winter. Some were standing dead and some were live. There was some rot in a couple of the logs and some had very dark heart wood. So anyway, here are some pictures.

Yes. All the logs were cut off my farm and there are not many left over 14-16". They die off before they get very big. I try to keep track of the individual trees of any size so I can harvest them if they start to die.

Today I learned that getting full size 2x12's from medium sized logs is a real pain.  I didn't have logs big enough to make a decent cant, so I had to just keep cutting slabs and then edge them.  Those are heavy slabs to be standing up to edge.  Originally the guy wanted 2x6 and then switched to 2x12.  I should have said no to that.
