I have heard about cypress having silica, but never that ERC has it.

I also did not know cedar had much silica. The ones I get are pretty small and cut real easy. I rarely get anything as nice as one Lynn posted above. Often the customer wants it in thin strips like 1/2" or so. I usually saw it through and through then stand it up and saw the flitches in 1" drops till I get a "pretty clean" edge then flip and edge the other side. If the customer wants it cleaner (and thinner) I'll keep flipping and keep edging till he says stop.

I do sometimes have problem with the fibrous bark on cedar stopping up my sawdust chute. (I have not removed my fingers in there like some, un-named members have done). I do find cedar seems to help clean up my bands. Buckeye also cleans them real good.

there is some in the bark, but even the wood looks like it has glitter in it if you look.

Eleven more logs to go.  They are very nice so they should make a whack of 2X12's.

Looks great!! How is the performance of your mill cutting the wider crotch stuff?
Walnut up here seems to saw real easy. Uber flat straight or crotch. My sharpener guy is good though.

Larry

Loaded up an ugly sycamore log to quarter saw last night and sawed it this morning when cool.  As ugly as the log was I was surprised to get some good looking boards out of it.

Back in the shop by 10am where I spent the rest of the day.  Outside 93 degrees with a  heat index of 106.

Looking good Larry! Sell that bad boy and treat yourself to the new wider frame and cut a full 38" 💪

78NHTFY

Managed to get to 3 of 13 logs from the walnut I cut recently.  Slabbed one log into 6 pcs live edge 9/4 x 10'.  Sticker pile is 10 rows high!  Easy lifting for the Takeuchi TL 150.... Now for the tough part: leave to dry; try to sell; make something out of them for myself/family?  One thing for sure, I HAVE to get my cordwood cut/split/stacked ASAP, 'cause I can't afford heating oil at present prices! All the best, Rob.

Nice! It's a good time to peel the bark off. Some light hammer whacks on the bark and peels right off

Saturday cut some boxelder logs a friend gave me last fall. Not sure what I'll do with the wood. More so just wanted to cut it because I have not cut any before. Lots of red stripes like I expected from seeing it here on the forum. Today cut up a red oak into 8/4 trailer decking.

Been really eyeing my boxelder and thinking about your eye candy! There is quite a few along my creek

fluidpowerpro

It cut really easy and was fun to see what was inside. I'll find out if it will dry straight. I read up on it after and I guess people use it for turning. Had I known ahead of time I would have cut some into turning blanks although someone could still glue the 4/4 together and then turn it.
Change is hard....
Especially when a jar full of it falls off the top shelf and hits your head!

Local wind direction is determined by how I park my mill.

For those of you have cut it, how does that color hold up in the boxelder? Awful pretty stuff!

It's never as bright as when you first open it up, dulls when it dries. But as soon as you plane, joint and finish it, the color comes to life again.

My first job after "dry dock".  1920bf of mostly 2X12's with 1X6's & 2X6's side lumber.

My next job (depending upon the customer getting help) may be starting tomorrow and will also be SYP framing lumber.

EDIT:  I talked to the customer last night and we will not saw until next week.  Hot as it is, I am glad.  ;D

Cuttin' the curves. ;D
Best repeat customer and his wife wanted benches for around the campfire. So he got a piece of pine from a pile that was destined for OWB fuel, and brought it over to saw. I cut some about 2 1/2" thick slabs out of it, and I found it worked best to face the curve in towards the backstops to get every inch of cut width. Not sure if it was a log or a limb, so we'll cross our fingers and see how it dries. :D

If you apply YellowHammer-isms, it don't roll so it ain't a log! ;)

It may not roll, but if you put it up on edge it will rock and that has to count for something, right? ;D

Was cutting a couple pitch pines that were leaning and just a matter of time before they uprooted. In the process a dogwood tree was damaged badly.Hated to cut it but it wasn't salvageable.Decided to cut a few small boards out of it.Heard wood is really hard and makes good felling wedges.Going to give it a try. Anyone know any other good uses?br>

Really good for handles on chisels, knives, etc.  excellent for carving mallets.  You can turn a nice billy club from dogwood. Never sawed into boards before.

Is there a kit you can get to convert one of those skill saws. Does it work pretty good ?
