Is this shake? Or just normal discoloration as wood approaches rotting?

Yes it is sycamore. Should I bother with getting those logs? It doesn't feel soft at all in the brown areas. Those logs are all about 28 inches or so in diameter

doc henderson

they all kind of look like that.  it is great quarter sawn, and can be stabilized with epoxy (low viscosity) if needed.

During yesterday's sawing I smelled a belt burning and noticed a chunk out of my drive belt so today I went to put my spare on. (I probably should post this in the did something dumb thread but I removed the bolt holding the clutch/brake assembly so the belt would fit. Afterwards I realized that was not needed. All I needed to do was remove the little shoe/guard for a little more space and disconnect the spring to the tension arm and remove the old belt and jump the new one on then adjust the tension to specs.) When I went to put this 3/8" X 2" bolt back on it broke so I had to rush to the local hardware and get a replacement and the spare shown above.

I don't know what caused the chunk to come out of this belt. I think it is the 3rd one in the mill in 1183 hours (Original and this is second replacement). I did learn how easy it really should be to replace the next one. I'll order another spare in the morning.

Loaded up some sycamore today. Some of it has problems, some of it looks good from the outside. Hoping to get a bit of quartersawn out of it, maybe will use as flooring.

Shipping it all to ky here in a week or so. Milling there costs 4 times less and thats where my flooring needs to be anyway....will post some pictures once its milled.

Yes but so is the broken one. Its hard to see in the picture due to the discoloration. The parts manual calls for grade 5 and I broke one before and my hardware store did not have it in grade 5 so I got grade 8 back then too.

I broke a ½" Grade 8 bolt a couple of weeks ago.  They are tough but yup, it can be done.

A Grade 5 will bend before it breaks but not so with a Grade 8.

A couple years ago I broke 2 bolts on my JD tractor that my repair guy said were equivalent to about a grade 10. I don't know what diameter they were but was part of my transmission. Fortunately it was really an easy fix and could have been a lot worse I was told.

I set the sawmill up this afternoon on the Cypress logs that I will begin sawing tomorrow morning.  Twenty-five tree length logs from 40' to 60'.

The Prentice loader will grab the logs and swing them around to the sawmill.  All of the logs except one will be bucked to 18'4".  The one exception will be 38' and I will saw an 8"X12" timber from it.

All of the jacket slabs will be 2"-3" thick and are the main target for this sawing.  They will be nailed onto the outside and inside of the house and chinked between to simulate a log house.  The "inside" lumber will be 1" & 1½".

I will saw the entire job "hourly rate".  There ain't no shade beside my umbrella so it will be HOT.

That should be a great saw job, MM.  Are you going to have to take your seat off to saw those?  If so, you will get your steps in.  JMoore and I have been busy with other things, so we have not been able to saw much lately.

I wanted to run a test log through the mill after replacing the drive belt yesterday so I grabbed this scrappy 8' walnut upper log and sawed it into some 8" wide 4/4 boards.  The mill saws fine but the lumber was crap due to splits in the log itself so I will just use of for stock on projects around here. The cant was off about 1/16" from front to back so I'll check the rail heights and run another log through before my next job.

No seat removal so the umbrella can stay and no walking.  I will remove it to saw the 38' timber.

I'd love to see a video or lots of pictures on that 38' beam.

The Prentice is doing a good job of bringing the logs to the sawmill.  Grab it and

swing around.

Position it beside the sawmill loader and then grab another.

I have sawn a few with crotchy and also some pecky.

A pecky log.

But the unusual thing about this job is that the principle cut list is for 3¼" slabs and then the cants being sawn into 4/4 random width.  I'm leveling the top of the log before sawing the slabs and then taking the wedge off of the cant before sawing it.

I think tomorrow we will saw a few timbers from the cants.

then Roger (ED pharmacist) came over.  he had a few oak logs from a railway right of way on his Dad's property out in Hays, KS.  (Fort Hays State University)  He has a couple old trucks.  He brought his wife Roxie's truck.  a 70s ford, owned by her grandpa and passed down.  it has a dump bed, and it needs a new bed floor.  you guessed it, oak boards.  Roger has a newer on also and it need the same treatment.  nice it came from his childhood farm.

My Cypress sawing is going very well but it's strange getting ~3¼" slabs first.

The slab pile is growing.

There is also a nice whack of 4/4 lumber plus ten 3X8's & 6X8's.  Next week we will saw some 8X8's & 10X10's.

I am seeing a fairly large number of pecky logs.  Here is one that had a carpenter ant colony that was nice.

My thoughts were that I would finish the middle of next week but...

This rolled in this afternoon and the truck driver said that this was only the first load.  :-X

Our plan is to saw the 38' timber tomorrow morning.  Yikes !!!  :o
