That's a Sawsquatch beam saw by Skilsaw.  Cuts 6-5/16".  They list for ~$700.  I picked up a couple at an online auction and resold one, so mine was "free".

I started on these five 12' long poplar logs. I have an order for 130 1X6X12. I finished the first 2 and got 46 of my 1X6's. I lost a good bit of the second log due to a bucking mistake. :( It was hanging over the ditch and I should have cut some on the bottom then cut vertically to prevent this I am thinking.

I put the big butt log (#3) on the arms at the end of the day. Those 2 blue dots you can barely see concern me.

About 348 bf from the 2 logs plus a bunch of 1" & 2" edging strips for the customer to use for stickers. On the sawhorses are 10' 1X6 and 1X4's I got as side lumber. I'll trim to length and put in stock. Under the trailer are some left over 1/2" pine edgings the customer left from my last order.

(Yes that sawhorse is crooked, I bumped it with the waste slabs when I hauled them off and had not straightened it before I took this picture.)

With our terrain anything square would likely just fall over anyway.

Actually, what is supposed to be square on a rough built sawhorse. I make the I-beam style top, nail 4 cut off 2X4 legs under the lip of the top 2X4 of the I-beam, nail into the center and lower I-beam then nail a stretcher across the bottom of each pair of legs, end and side and it is done. A pair will hold an awful lot of weight.

Lynn,

I hope so too but never remember getting such a stain from a chainsaw. I will look more closely before I start sawing tomorrow. The tree was on the bank of a run-off but I don't know of any old fence line close to it and it is too low for an old posted sign or such.

That ain't from no chainsaw that touched in the last 20 years. :D Try not to have a new blade on the mill before you get through that area. I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling looking at that.

Yep, a new blade will find it every time if its there. I might even go dig around the stump a little bit and see if it might have been below where I bucked the log. Sometimes I get lucky. Well, you'd think with the law of averages I would one of these days. Its bound to happen one of these times.

Tom,

I am afraid you may be right in this case. I may peel the bark off in the area to see if anything shows up that way. If it turns out to be a fence wire and I can determine the direction I can saw parallel to it and leave it in a board.

I haven't done any sawing for money in  good while. I'll start on this pil today or tomorrow. A mix of pine and oak, 20 foot down to 7 foot. He wants all 2x decking from it. Lots of dirt and rocks from where it was pushed out of the way while he had a road built. I've already told him to expect a lot of blad

Lee,

I thought only my customers were crazy enough to stack logs 5-6 logs high then expect me to take them down with a cant hook? I tell them no more than 3 logs high and may change that to 2 logs high at the rate they are going.

I resumed work filling my order of 130 12' long 1X6 poplar boards today. The ugly blue stain log turned out to be free of metal. smiley_sweat_drop I got 38 boards out of it plus some side lumber for stock/sale to others. I then sawed the other 2 smaller logs I had and was 13 boards short.

I already had the tree down so I bucked, beveled and dragged this 13" SED 12' log out with my ATV. It was steep but straight down the hill to the mill. It yielded 15 good clear boards and a few sticker strips. And best of all - it completed my order!

132 poplar 1X6X12 plus edging strips for stickers on the trailer. Shorter 1X6 and 1X4 side lumber on the high tech sawhorses. ;) 599 bf sawed and flat stacked today. I'll take it to the customer about 30 miles away in the morning. I figure about 3,000 lbs on the trailer. I'll return it to my son after dropping off the lumber.

10' 4/4 added to stack cut a couple of months ago. Several hickory sneaked in on us.

12' long stack, 4'-5' wide, 3/4 & 4/4 WO and RO boards cut today.

One live edge X 12/3 WO X 10' long. After we cut off 2' of the flare on this butt log so I could make it fit between the blade guides. Not shown 3 each 6X6X10 WO posts

A long hard day with about 2,000 bf/sf cut. A lot of it was 3/4 thick mostly RO boards. A couple of scrappy RO logs cut into stickers.

The customer wife was most excited about the 3" one LE/Book-matched WO which was the last log of the day. Did you know WO 10' long X 3" thick and 16-20 inch wide is heavy?

Be careful talking about ancestors - I am only the second generation in my family to walk upright. I took one of these DNA tests and it said 10% Scotch-Irish, 35% Neanderthal, 30% Sasquatch 25% unknown. ::)

I would have assumed Viking would have shown up on your test.  Y'all had a busy day.  Slabs that size are heavy, especially at the end of the day.

The past couple of Saturdays John and I have had the opportunity to saw mostly our own logs.  We have a few piles of pine logs that have been sitting around since June.  We have been sawing orders out of those logs, but it was time to saw them before the borers got to them.

We sawed everything into 1x.  Two pallets of 1x8" and one of 1x6".  We also sawed some cedar and cypress.

I just knew that had to be the case.  Just knew it.  But, now I have the data to support it.

Well, no picture today because we had to pack up in the rain and get out. I'm thinking we sawed about 1100 -1200 bf before we had to stop. We working on red oak 2X6's which saw pretty fast. Still cutting 4/4 oak and a hickory or two as well as a couple of 6" square WO  posts. The highlight was several big red and white oak logs the lady wanted made into 2" 3" thick live edge stock for shelves and some 4" thick mantels. I salvaged a couple of 2X6s and some 4/4 in the process. It was pretty wood and they were real happy with the results which always makes me happy. Sawing the big, wide, LE pieces is fun and produces a lot of wood quickly but each one is unique and you only get one shot at sawing them so I probably spend too much time checking my measurements and such. On one log I stopped to show the customer when I squared the back that I could get 4 wider 2" LE slabs or I could take another cut off the back and produce 7 narrower slabs which was the option they took. I'll go back tomorrow and hopefully we will finish. If not I'll schedule another weekend with them. They are only 14 miles away and real nice folks to work with.

Sooooo, I am back in the sand box 236 miles from home.

It certainly looks like business as usual with sandy logs, but my clock is ticking whether I am sawing or brushing......pays the same.

I parked the sawmill on location this evening and we will decide where to set up for sawing tomorrow morning.
