Used my 084 this weekend and I'm tired of it snapping back on a cold start and trying to dislocate my fingers.
Putting an Elastostart handle on should be easy.....but, whats the best way to feed the rope thru the soft rubber part?
Yes, the saw was sold with them, mine is older, solid grip.

Interesting...guess I need to order a rope asm also.
Thanks!

I learned that overcoming that "snapping back on cold start" was possible by pulling slowly until feeling the compression. Then pulling hard to start.
I drop start and it was "killing" me when I got the snap back. But creeping up on the compression, never had it happen again.

Maybe it worked just for my saw, but might give that a try.

10-4, thanks for the tip. I'll try that.

Speaking of 084's I had one come back on me hard and I could predict the weather for about two years. It now sports a Stihl 460 rescue saw D handle . I do however have an elasto-start on a souped up MS 200T which can be a pistol some times .

Press in the Decompression button and this problem goes away, had to learn that with the new 500i because with the old 361 i didn't need to push the button. but the new 500 ripped my fingers good several times so i changing habbits

I had an old MS310 that did not have a decompression release.  It was not a big saw nor hard to start except when the temperature was below the 20's, etc.  It was killing my old fingers so....

I got a strap

That would loop around the saw's pull handle

And my gloved hand.  This transferred the pulling force to my arm and solved the problem.   I later found that the right length of strap or rope would serve the same purpose and was easier to remove.

elastostart will help but when your playing with big saws start them when your MAD, that helps alot lol  , if you really want to play with something fun to start I got a Super Contra , 137cc with the timing cranked up abit . That thing will straighten your fingers and believe you it hurts but for a real old saw that thing cuts

The de-comp button works fine, I push it in after every pull, one learns from past mistakes....lol

During the lock down I did a complete rebuild of two Partner P-100's .On  the first start up one tried to pull me through the recoil .Then I put D-handles on both of them .Those are 99 cc but they can come back like they are 200 .BTW I have D-handles on many saws .I usualy buy them 4 at a time .

Roll the 500 over to just past top dead and she'll fire without needing the decompression button pushed in, on mine I've never used it even well in a cut but we do a sort of drop start.
