I spent the last couple days pulling logs out of the woods across the street from me.  Dead Falls and standing deads.  Walnuts, Cherry, Osage, Ash and Elm.

I have a Warn 9000lb winch with 3/8"ths cable.  I picked up two 50' cables so that I could park the truck on the edge of the woods and use the purchased 100 feet of cable in conjuction with the 125 feet on the winch to pull out the logs.

The first Walnut was a DOOZY!  26" x 21' VENEER topped with a 22" x 10' log then a 19" x 10' log.  I had the winch working well and when things got TIGHT I stopped and that little voice said:  "Where is your cable-towel?"

I was tought in the service that ANYTIME winching you should place a towel or coat or something over the cable.  If the cable snaps the towel helps to absorb the reaction and slow things down.

Well, as soon as I heard my maker I stopped and looked for something to put on the cable.  Since it was hot out the only thing I had were my new chaps.  Off they came and I placed them on the winch cable about 20' in front of the truck.  It wasnt 1 minute later while winching that log out the log hung on a root and before I could let go of the switch the cable snapped right at the hook!   Where did the cable go?  Most of it was rapped up in my chappes and sitting on the hood of my truck.

I can only imagine what would have happen had I not put those chapps on the cable.  I would bet that cable would have gone right through the front windshield.

I will post some pics of the cable tomarrow.

I sure am Glad the Good Lord keeps talking to me!

We have rigged up a snatch block to hang as high into a GOOD tree as possible. Pass the cable through it and you will raise the pull end of the log, same as them High rigger boys in the BIG woods. Gives ya a little time to react when ya get hung. I would also use ½" cable.

  Glad ya had some "Help" workin with you, Kirk.  :) :)
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
   Second, it is violently opposed; and
   Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

They used to lend out a portable winch for a snow mobile. It was a sled with a winch you anchored to trees.
