Black oak table and benches nearing finish. All center cut slabs with pith intact. To me pith is the prime rib of woods, pith with shake, umm, even better-yum.

I love it and I agree.  My flooring at the Cabin has whatever the log had to give, and back during my furniture building days, I often used centered pith panels on cabinet doors, etc.

I'm getting lots of large red oak tornado logs to custom saw. Most are low grade with lots of cracks. Folks with limited woodworking experience wanting live edge slabs. I have to explain the cracks and defects will add interest to there project.

Thanks for posting the pictures Rob. I'm going to snatch that one table picture to show folks what is possible.

Well no plans today and dreary weather so I figured I would get some small projects done that need doing and get them off the list. I made a quick and dirty postcard rack for that new shop because they need one. Nothing fancy, a little rustic, and free for them anyway.

Just some scrap lexan. For the windows and scrap angle cut offs from the beer caddies.

Speaking of the beer caddies, my SIL does not drink beer but he likes to bring some NA seltzer to his band rehearsals. So she finally dropped me off some sample cans which are odd sized at 19 oz. And I made his a 4 pack carrier with and erc handle.

So something to do on a cloudy day. The sun is out now. Let's see what's next.

Those racks were common around here in the 70's. My grandparents had a fancy one for years where the news print went for starting morning fires, as well as old Field and Stream type magazines my grandfather read and put adds in for sports to come hunting or fishing.

Old memories eh?  ffcheesy

Doc they say that's the most recorded gospel of all time. Great song for jams and around a fire. That's a nice version with BUddy Miller, Brother Jerry Douglas, and Allison Kraus Backing up Emmy Hair Louis (sorry, Emmy Lou Harris). For tune a tune written in 1929 it sure has stood the test of time.
Actually, I am surprised you didn't post this one, another of my lifelong favorites:

Swamp, yeah, those things are everywhere for magazines and such. Last I looked we still have them in my barber shop. I just figured these folks needed something like that because I saw the cards on their counter and they kept getting knocked around and needed straightening every time a customer checked out. So I measured the end wall made one to hold most of that stuff. I want to build a relationship and I thought a freebie might help show it was not all about the money, just having a good working relationship.

Not making anything at the moment but when I do I'm going to brand it.DIL got me a gadget I've been wanting for awhile but to tight to order one. It's a little branding iron made of brass that you heat up with a propane torch.Tried it on a scrap piece of wood and it works pretty well.Think it would work better on a smooth piece of wood.

nice brand.  I have had one for 20 years and I and still perfecting its use.  for a nice piece try it on a scrap first.  softer woods brand faster and darker.

That looks really nice! Now you can run around putting your brand on everything! It's been on my list too, but I am also to cheap Frugal.
Enjoy it.

For the branding iron I have heard that dampening the wood helps make cleaner branding.  ffsmiley

Reminds me of the style chair used at Lloyds barber shop when I was a kid. Pretty much exact, except the cross pieces and legs were rounded. But same style. Great job.

I'm facetiously saying you are a jerk! This is beautiful and "I'm learning" to you means years of trial and error to us "normal" folk.

Great work, and I hope you understand my comment above, it's good natured ribbing.

Larry once again beautifully done. I wish more people understood what goes into pulling off a project like that. Not a simple task by any stretch.

I forgot to take my camera so no pictures but I've been replenishing my crate stocks lately.

I've made 12-15 quart and pint crates. Each crate holds one dozen canning jars. My quart size use a dressed poplar 1X8 and are 12.5" inside width and 18" long total length. My pint size use a dressed poplar 1X6 and are 10-3/8" inside width and 16" total length. The pint size crates will nest neatly inside a quart sized crate.

I am using 2" wide X 3/8" poplar lath strips for the sides and bottoms and 1.5" ring shank (dry wall) nails to attach them.

I took a few to a new shop about 13 miles away and left a couple of each along with a couple of bluebird houses and a couple of benches on consignment to see if they will see. I took some more to a local fruit and plant market where I was shopping for melons and maters and asked the guy there. He asked his wife and they were not interested in any to sell but the lady bought 4 of each size to set up a display she'd been thinking about so it still worked out well.

Howard you need an engraver to customize the ends.  smiley_smug01  it is of course expensive equipment and has a learning curve.  I think the old fruit crates tended to have a paper label on the end.  you could do that on a printer and use your wife's photo skills in the graphic art.

what is a "dressed" 1 x 6.  is it a full-size rough cut, but planed till it is smooth whatever size that is?
