John,

No but it would be a nice touch to brand my name in there. Then I'd have to come up with the logo.

Doc,

I see the design committee is hard at work. Dressed means it has been through the planer.

so, no specific final thickness.  I assume the other dimensions are exact.  and don't you put a base or foot board that helps the like sized crates stack up?  I thought I remembered this.  I know you have posted pics before.  Might as well benefit from all your experience and R&D.  Do you hand nail these or have a ring shank nail in a pneumatic gun?  Thanks.  Oh, and do you put the slats on long, and trim the on the mill?   ffsmiley ffsmiley ffsmiley   sorry, I did not want to disappoint our friends.   ffcheesy

Okay, okay. I guess outside dimensions are 18" X 8-3/8" X 13-5/8" for the large (Dozen quarts) and 16" X 6-3/8" X 11-1/8" (Dozen pints) when you add the 3/8" lath straps on the sides and bottoms.

The nails are hand driven so I can advertise as hand made and no clamping is required or used

I have no idea what a base or foot board for stacking means. Probably a Kansas thing.

I tried drilling a couple of finger holes in the end but that did not really increase the sale price and just increased time and labor requirements.

I pre-drill the ends in groups of 3 on my drill press and put a dab of glue on each when I nail them. I tried a cordless (20V stapler) with 1-1/4" narrow gauge staples but the wood was too hard and they left about 1/4" of staple exposed. I may try again with 1" staples and see if that works.

I know I should make a nailing jig in each size.

Doc,

Since these don't have to rest exactly on a level floor the legs don't have to be that precise so I can skip the "Trim on the mill" step.

(And if that doesn't suit you and answer all your questions I hope the next time you are surfing new Only Fan's Accounts you find your grandmother posting there! ffcheesy )

I thought there was a board across the ends so if you stacked up same size crates, they would not get out of line and stay stacked up.

Been working on this slab of white oak for awhile on and off and finally got it fairly flat.Used a electric hand planer so it took awhile.Got it sanded and a finish on it and it turned out pretty good.Found out white oak is a lot harder to work with than walnut or red oak.Bought a set of metal legs a while back and think this would be a good use for them.

Tule Peak- My workplace bought a decent sized grill so we can have some cookouts. I was tasked with assembling it. Prior to assembly I went around to the door where I'm taking the grill and measured it's width, then found a couple alternative doors that would work, if the grill was too wide, since I didn't really want to put it together outside. Really, I shouldn't have worried about it and just rented a crane!

That's a beautiful table! I've seen cranes used for pool installations but never for a table. Good stuff!

Well hey, here's a big step down from the prior posts, but I gotta pay the bills, right?
So while I was in MI I got a confirmation on an initial order from the local grocery store selling only locally made goods for some gift box crates. I am also placing some beer caddies on consignment in their store. I started on it yesterday and got some of the crate slat over to the laser folks, in the meantime today I did a lot of sanding and assembled as far as I could.

Just waiting for the engraved slats to come back and they will be ready for delivery.

I also worked on the 2 commission jobs I have and think I may be done with the finishing. We'll see tomorrow when I do a full inspection. If all is good then one is complete and the other just needs assembly.
 Anything for a buck, right?

Another day, a little more progress. I finished off these two custom orders. A little higher quality (and price) then yesterday's 'stuff'.

The one on the right was a direct copy of a bench I have in stock except this one has the slab upside down. The client wants it as a printer table and needed a minimum width which I could hit with an existing slab turned over. She like the idea so....

The one on the left was a lamp table I had made about 4 or 5 years ago and had at a show, but the client said it was too big. Rather than start over, we decided to modify this one. I cut 2.5" off of each end of the top, cut the skirt sides to match, cut 3" off the legs, re-flattened the top, and refinished everything all over.

I promised delivery by late September, but had them done today and she will pick up on Monday. She's a happy camper and I like happy campers, especially when they have a check in their hands. ffcheesy

Cut a pretty good sized poplar about a month ago that had a crook about half way up.I just cut straight logs on both sides of the crook and left it lay.The more I looked at it the more I saw future benches or tables so I peeled the bark off it and sawed it up into two inch slabs. They look sort of interesting. Will see what they turn into after they dry awhile.

Good choice. When you find them, you have to saw them. I have a stack of RO and another of Ash just like that, dried 4 years now. I have one RO in the shop just getting ready to work on. Clean ones don'r come around often.

@Wlmedley man, the colors in that poplar are incredible.

I've heard a lot of people don't like poplar color and I think it's beautiful!

Son came home for a few days to visit. He asked if I'd help him make a simple shelf while he was here. He had sketched up what he wanted, but doesn't have much more than a handful of basic cordless tools to work with so we went down to my shop and built the shelf.

As I said, it was a simple shelf, but it required cutting a couple of poplar boards I had to length, jointing a rough edge, ripping to width on the table saw, planing to finished thickness and cutting to final lengths on the miter saw then assembly. It was a good opportunity to run him through the various pieces of equipment and explain their purpose and safe operation. I'd do a couple of pieces at each machine then let him finish then move on to the next step.

The shelf came out nice (for what it is) and he is happy with it but more important to me is that I was able to spend some quality time with my son and share a little bit of the old mans knowledge and experience. Growing up he played sports all year round and never had much interest in woodworking. Since moving away he has done a lot of his own auto and home repair and often asks for my advice and guidance. Feels pretty good to pass it on and even better to work together in the shop.

My dad passed away in 2018, just as I was starting to get more into wood working and stuff like that. He'd tried hard to teach me a lot as I grew up but I didn't have a whole lot of patience for it and he was the type that worked a lot, so when we spent time together, every other weekend, when I was a kid, it all felt like work and no fun. I've grown to appreciate what I've learned from him but still get very heartbroken that he didn't stick around, so we could make those memories, now, while I'm in my 40's and beyond.

All that to say that it's great and heartwarming to hear a story like that @NE Woodburner !

Today was a rain out day, although I worked out in it in the yard on my woodshed for the shop. All I need to do now is cut some steel and screw it down up there. Old pallets and lots of reject $3  - 2'x4's and not so beautiful 1x6's either. Did the job, doesn't have to be beautiful for firewood. And I can't say it's all that square, but it still came together quite well actually for a slapped together job.
