QuoteAs I mentioned to "Cutter", that is a species that I will never be able to saw.
If I ever make a Mississippi road trip, I will be sure to bring along a maple log for you to saw.

partial pallet of axe throwing targets for a local venue.  plan is to try getting length with a chainsaw to trim to 48 inches.

worked ok.  I will prob get better.  these can be a little down and dirty.  We will see if the owner is ok with it.  this is cottonwood and I get 8 bucks each.  2 x 10 x 48.  He used to have to drive 2 hours one way to get them for the same price.  making good use of short logs that would go to the landfill.

Doc,that looks like fairly easy money to me. That would be right up my alley. Problem is I don't have any cotton wood around here plus I don't know anyplace where they throw axes. Looks like there would be a lot of broken axe handles.Maybe cut some hickory and supply those too.

I do not know of much hickory in this area.  I am not sure what I make.  I usually come across CW but often need to go pick it up.  take the gooseneck and track loader.  hooking up, loading, unloading at home and unhooking all takes time.  The wood is free.  He is getting busier and needs about 30 boards every 2 to 3 months.  It is fun for me, and at least I get some money for time and use of equipment.  They were struggling for a bit, so glad he is doing better.  It is run by Zack, his wife and son.  the scraps are used for stickers, and skid bottoms.  The scraps are good for fireplaces and firepits.

Doc, you are giving the Axe guy a real good deal. I have sold some to a fellow in central Florida. Ordering cottonwood from up north is real expensive, I cut some nice poplar from the farm for him and he was happy with it.

doc henderson

I prefer end grain rounds.  they last forever if you just leave them outside in the rain and moisture.  the axe marks disappear with a good soaking.  He needs soft wood and is trying to mimic the league style of target that ends up being 40 inches wide x 48 inches tall.

From what he told me cottonwood is the preferred wood but poplar is a close second. They grade the quality of boards and use the best for tournaments. He wanted the boards full 2x10x48, the ordered ones from up north would come in anywhere from 1 5/8" up. I cut mine precise and trimmed with the radial arm saw. They were pretty boards.

doc henderson

what was the cost?  He gets what he gets!  lol!  not all straight grained.  He wants it fresh and not too dry.

I made my tally, wrote it up and then lost my post so here it goes again:

There is no way to make a picture of the entire whack because it is about 36' X 36' X 10' high.

I made 34 half day sawing trips and my first sawing day was July 22nd.  I believe that this is my largest single setup job with a total of 25,497 bf of full sized 1X12, 1X10, 1X8, & 1X6 plus the 4X4's & 6X6's.

My next sawing job is scheduled for October 26.  We are wanting to smell some Mountain air.   ffwave   move_it

Lynn,
I know I joked about this before, but I'll probably run my little Hobby mill the rest of my life- and I doubt I will ever hit 25,000 bf... (My "Lumber Sales" spreadsheet says I'm at 1,505 bf Total sold at this point). 1,500 bf would be a slow morning for you.

Lynn,
Where are you going to get some mountain air?  I'm just waiting for a cold front to chase the humidity away.

Actually my average was about 750bf per half day.  ffsmiley

November is shaping up with 3 repeat customers, various QS hardwoods, SYP framing, and Cypress for siding.  Passing off the "sandbox" customer plus various other sawing jobs has greatly reduced my sawing this year which was the plan.

@TimW, we will be pointed toward the Smokies.

Cookies.

The wife of one of my best repeat customers contacted me about cutting some cookies for an upcoming event she is having. I cut them from the soft maple I have been sawing lately, and made extras if some crack. I also said I'd cut more fresh right before the event if need be.

She requested I make them just like the table centerpiece cookies I did for her wedding, 6 years ago. smiley_love

you might keep them in a carboard box to slow the drying.  tough with maple cause then it may mold.  they look great.  are they sanded and have finish on them?  some folks are fine with cracks, but some warp and make it like a corkscrew.

They are stacked on stickers for now, under cover with air circulation. Typically I don't have much trouble with mold on maple. Though I clean any wet sawdust off, if its left on the wood grain it can leave purple spots. No finish, just water on fresh cut wood for visual effect. ffsmiley
I will see if she wants them sanded or not, and then do accordingly.

10 or 12 years ago a lady from my wife's church asked me for cookies for centerpieces for a fall themed dinner. She wanted oak. I told her they would crack and she was OK with that. I agreed to cut them for her. I asked my wife what price she thought I should charge and she just gave me "the look" so I knew this was going to be a donation. Anyway, the lady was very happy with the cookies and her meal was a success and she decided to use them for more dinners. She asked me if I would store them for her and I said "no". Once any wood products leave my yard I don't want them to come back. She used those cookies for years.
