I was channel surfing a bit earlier today and clicked on the Outdoor channel for a few minutes. They were lining up a shot on a big mule deer buck out west somewhere and shot him from 300-400 yards. Of course he dropped right in his tracks.

The part that I thought was odd/funny was after the hunter shot him he and the guide kept whispering things like "He's down. Great shot. Well done. Lets go get the ATV, Etc."

Why were they whispering? They'd just fired off a .300 Winchester magnum or a 7mm magnum or such and everybody within several miles had heard the shot. The deer was down. Did they think if he heard them he'd suddenly come back to life? Besides the buck was several hundred yards away.

    What were they thinking? ffcheesy

Yes, I have noticed that many times.  I suppose that the mind-set of being quiet supersedes the reality of the moment.  ffcheesy

Or it was a mixture of live filming and re-enactment and the whispering was to simulate the live version.

I've got mixed feelings about those shows.  Today's rifles and ammunition do have the capability of making those 300-500 yard shots or even further.  Not every hunter or even most hunters are as good as their equipment but the shows make it seem like nothing to it.  It's ok if they totally miss but a wounded animal isn't ok in my view.  On the plus side the shows probably do encourage new hunters to start hunting.  I just hope they do it ethically and respect the animals.

barbender

I'm not much of a fan of a lot of the hunting shows.

That said, sometimes "force of habit" is prevalent, like the time I was elk hunting with some guys that typically hunted Grizzly country. We weren't in bear country, and I couldn't understand why they were so frantic in their approach to dressing the cow elk one of them killed. They realized what they were doing, and said that when hunting around Cody, Wyoming where they were from, you had about 15-20 minutes after the rifle shot before you had company. Dinner bells to the ol griz😬

I've also seen these shows where some bad guy is after a man or young woman and they trick him and knock him out and they dramatically say "Hurry up and let's get out of here before he comes to".

Why? If some ax murderer is after me and I knock him out he's not coming to.  smiley_thumbsdown

If he does he will look like the mummy wrapped/tied up with every rope, lamp cord and roll of duct tape in the area. He's never going to be a threat to me again. And he may wake up with a couple more lumps on his head besides the one he started with.

Well it's all entertainment. There are several reasons to remain quiet after the animal is down, one of which is, you don't know what you can't see and there may be another opportunity for your hunting partner. Best to play it safe until there is no reason to.
On the subject of fake TV and movie stuff that makes me nuts is the TV tasers (I call them that). Seems like every taser knocks out the victim cold and he doesn't 'wake up' for a while. This is just nonsense. I have seen literally dozens of people get tasered and never, not once, has any of them passed out or even come close.  They are a bit sore but never passed out. It's just not a thing. Don't even get me started on the stuff I see done by TV and movie EMT's often has me wanting to scream at the screen. Seeing rifle models in movies that take place 30 or 40 years before that model of rifle was designed and built also makes me nuts. Seeing, for instance, an 1866 Winchester Yellow Boy in an early civil war movie just makes me go do something else because I know the rest of the movie has to be sloppy also.

Tom,

I am sure those were "prototype" Yellow Boy rifles and the unit was provided with pre-production models produced and ready for field testing.

I have not seen anyone knocked unconscious by a taser. What I see is some little guy or scantily clad young lady being chased by a big bulky guy and he/she squirts a trail of soap or cooking oil on the floor in the kitchen then when the guy rushes in he slips and hits hit head on the tile floor or counter or such then they talk and rush away before he wakes up. Nope - if I have him down he ain't getting back up. That just don't make no sense. ffcheesy

One of my favorites for quick thinking was on Bluebloods when Eddie is undercover and captured by sex trafficers and she goes in the shower, turns the water on, hides, and when the bad guy comes in and rips the shower curtain aside she hits him from behind with the toilet lid.

Don't get me started on every commercial that features a fisherman has said individual holding a spinning reel upside down...Googan style!

Then there's actors using tools, it never looks natural!   Gene Hackman on the roof of his house applying wooden shingles in Unforgiven comes to mind.  Rod Taylor in The Birds is another.

Ted,

Maybe that was injecting truth and realism into Unforgiven. Remember the deputy said about him "He sure ain't no carpenter. There isn't a square corner anywhere in that house." ffcheesy

Tonight, being the full moon, the deer hunting should pick up!

It is believed that when the full moon appears, the rut kicks in and some of the deer get "stupid" and make mistakes!

We'll see what happens in the next few days!

Did you ever notice that when you go hunting with a bow the deer pass 40-50 yards away just out of comfortable shooting range but when you go out with a large caliber high powered, flat shooting long range center fire rifle the deer will walk under your stand close enough you can spit on them. :wacky:

Did you ever notice a good shot on a deer ends with it DRT or it runs to the creek?

"Dead right there" = DRT

Or run to the creek and get wet and die.

Today was our first day of rifle season so both bucks I saw yesterday but could not get a shot with my crossbow were no shows. At 4:00 pm I looked up from my reading in my upper shooting house and spotted a deer standing broadside. I spotted the smooth texture of its hide against the wrinkled texture of the fallen leaves. I checked with my scope and discovered it was a big doe. It is antlerless season and I have doe tags and will likely harvest 1 or more later I did not want her today. I wanted her to come lure a big buck in to me. My feeder went off while we were looking at each other and she started my way but got a scent of where I'd walked in I guess and started snorting and ran off and her fawn behind her. Of course she warned every other deer in the area,

An hour and half later I came home and hooked the little cart to the 4 wheeler and went to the woodshed to get my wife some more firewood. On the way I rode right past a doe and yearling in the pasture, loaded the cart then drove back past the doe within 30 yards and she just stood there and watched.

I am dead certain this was the same deer as my shooting house is right up the ridge 400-500 yards away.

Now why does an old doe bust you and warn every buck around when she is 60-70 yards away from a hunter in a deer blind in the woods then casually watch the same guy riding and working 30 yards from her in an open pasture and never say a word or move out of the way? :huh?

Because up in the woods the big buck was about 100 feet behind her, but in the open pasture there was not another deer around.  :wacky:
