I added a smoked pork neck bone, diced celery and a little crushed red pepper.  Before it's done I'll take the neck bone out and get the meat off to add back to the peas.

I'll remind everybody of my Dad's take on BE peas and what the old timers said:

"If you eat BE Peas and hog jowls on New Years Day you will have a better year ahead"

Dad said in the deep South dried BE peas were one of the few foods country folks could grow and save without canning or refrigeration and a piece of smoked hog jowl was the cheapest cut of meat you could buy for seasoning so if you were down to eating BE peas and smoked hog jowls on New Years, things had to get better because they could not get much worse. ffcheesy

Collards were the go-to greenery where I grew up in N. Fla.

Here too but not all of the family likes collards so we go with spinach greens. Obviously the obligatory black eyed peas with ham and of course cornbread  food1
