This customer was going to lay his beams on the cab and tail gate.  We make a quickly I beam saw horse to save his cab.

Another customer ordered a 20' beam.  He came to get it with an F-150 garage princess truck.  He drove over it and tied one end to the front bumper and the other end to the trailer hitch.  He said he got home with no problems.

Ted's pic reminds me of years ago hauling a bunch of 20' 2x4's for building my garage. I made a bed rack for my truck and hung 6' over the front, 6' over the back, tied it down and got them home OK.
Though I did notice when I unloaded that where uprights of the rack went into the stake pockets on the pickup box, some had dented down from the weight. :uhoh: ffcheesy

Had a neighbor who worked for the big power company as  lineman. He could take all the scrapped poles he wanted. He eventually built a big two story garage and split rail fences. To get them home from 60 miles away, he placed them on the cab and tailgate. Both became very U-shaped! It was a nice truck.

Ted,

Thanks for the picture and idea. I have some long boards in the near future I have to cut and haul a couple miles and was wondering how to get them on my 5X8 trailer without too much overhang on the rear or hitting my truck tailgate on the front. Now I see some options I had not thought of.

This is why I love this site.

Some of the old steel hauler trucks had a side bracket mounted on the ends of the front and rear bumper. That way they could haul long lengths along side the truck. (But they couldn't pick up passengers). ffcheesy

Also seen where they make a pickup bed extender for hauling long lumber too. Consists of a square steel tube that mounts in the hitch receiver and extends out, then comes up in a "T" shape to support the load.

Howard, I could see one sawhorse near the cab and a board at the rear held in place by the truck stake pockets.  That way weight would be off the top of the tailgate.

Ted,

I would use it in the front of the trailer to raise the front of the lumber enough to swing up over the tailgate of the truck.

I had a friend that worked for a power/telephone contractor and he built a log cabin home out of old poles.  It mysteriously burned to the ground because you could not stand the fumes to stay inside.  :uhoh:

With your WV terrain I would suggest quite a bit of clearance between the tail gate and the lumber on level ground.
