Sinus Perforation.

Last year, 3 days before the pigroast, I was eating some potato chips when unbeknownst to me, an old filling fell out of my top right back molar. I lmunched down happily not knowing, and split the tooth behind my right eye tooth to the roots, exposing the nerve.  I was dealing with this when I was burned at the pigroast. Apparently you can lump pains together, as I didn't think about it much until a couple three weeks later after the pain from the burns had subsided, and the tooth started giving me trouble if I got food anywhere near it. I tried to get an appointment in the U.P. because that is where I was at. No luck, 1 year out for new patients.

  So, I called my dentist down state. Nothing open until March. So, I was careful when eating, and got by. A week before the appointment, Joe and Stacy came up to the cabin. Joe offered me a bite of hunter's sausage he brought.  I took a bite and then a chew on the good side of my mouth and bit down on a whole peppercorn. It shattered my back lwer left side molar, exposing the nerve.

So, I finally get to the dentist, and he says they all have to come out, but he wouldnt do it. Said I needed an Oral surgeon. He would refer.

By now I'm really becoming a miserable sob, but whatever. So, I called for the appointment.  May 12th was the first available consultation. May 12!!  So I called my dentist office back and said you gotta do something, so they gave me another appointment 4 days later. The dentist came in and said why dont you want to go to the oral surgeon? I said I wanted to go, but they can't get me in until the middle of may. Dr. Fred said, Jeff, if I try to do this, you will have problems. Let me go make a call. He came back and said, they can get you in for consult april 7th.

I went for the consult. My blood pressure was 164 over 101.  They said I had to get that down before they would consider putting me under,  but the could do it via injection. On May 2nd. I said please put me on your cancellation list. They said, let me check our Midland office. A cancelation had just come in for this past thursday at 11:50. I said I would take it.

It was horrble. Apparently I am about 5% of the population that has multi rooted teeth. They really beat me up getting them out, but the big problem, the molar that started everything had roots into my sinus cavity, and when they pulled it,  it left a sinus perforation. A hole from my tooth socket directly into my sinuses. They plugged it and gave me instructions which I faithfully followed. Yesterday I suddenly felt some foreign object in the back of my mouth.  It was a stitch, and then shortly after things got weird. WhenI would breath through my mouth I could feel it coming out my nose. If I breathed through my nose my mouth would inflate. I lost all ability to move saliva in my mouth to my throat and I am not allowed to spit.  I called the oncall surgeon last night. She gave me instructions on how to handle it until this morning.  Over night, it seemed to close back up, but now my entire mouth hurts, but I think that is because I laid off the Motrin. Motrin has a side effect for me as all pain meds do. It removes my ability to urinate normally.

Anyhow, I am now a week behind on all the chores I have to do up north, but stuck down here.  I cant do any thing strenuous or really anything. Walking, each step brings pain andIm scared to death this opens back up.If it does not stay closed on it's own, it will require surgery.

The good thing is, I guess, is that I've lost 11 lbs since last Monday. Its impossible to eat anything of substance.

Well, that didnt last long just getting up and showering opened it back up. Back to see the surgeon for eval at 12:30 today.  This royaly sucks.

It may have just been some mucus and the shower hydrated and opened it back up.

I forgot to add, I can't hardly turn my head. I think I wrenched it staining against them trying to get the teeth out. One person was trying to hold my head as the surgeon was wrenching back and forth.  Seemed reminiscent of an old western where the dentist put a knee in you chest.

That sucks for sure. I've has similar getting a molar removed. Although I didn't get fully perforated I had to have a broken piece of tooth root surgically removed from my sinus. It then got infected, over Cristmas holiday and my face swelled up. That was pretty miserable.

Hope the docs can get you sorted out. The painkillers and lack of sleep really mess with you for sure.

So sorry to hear this Jeff. I'm one of those multi root people, too. Almost got pulled out of the chair by 140 pound dentist/sadist because he didn't want to do a surgical extraction. Then he had to do a surgical extraction. I hope you can get on top of this quickly.

Well, the surgeon said to carry on for now as instructed. She believes the perforation will eventually heal shut. Not much to do this length of time after surgery but let it finish healing If it does not shut, they can't do anything to fix it for about 6 weeks from date of extraction

I was hoping they could just put a stitch back in that came out, but I guess they can't now. So, basically I was told to deal with it for now.  Crud  Crap and son of a biscuit eh?

Good news is I got some protein down after 4 days via 2 soft fried eggs.

Well that doesn't sound good. Glad you are getting  help. I'd be tempted to use a packing, but I will stay in my lane. Hope it gets easier to eat.

hopefully and antibiotic to ward off evil spirits.  I had an impacted wisdom tooth in my 20s.  Turned my head and it flattened me on my desk.  My boss sent me to his chiropractor who got and x-ray of my neck and said you got and impacted wisdom tooth.  antibiotics and I was fine and got the teeth out in Residency at Albany med center.

Yes, on antibiotics for 2 weeks. Amoxycylin

It makes me sit on the toilet. I have aversions to every medicine it seems.

I'm at the age where my teeth seem to be brittle and break off. Dentist pulls it, sticks in an implant and puts me on a heavy dose of Amoxycylin. First time I got diarrhea bad and the dentist suggested yogurt, and it worked great. Had probably 6 more implants after that first one without problem with the help of yogurt.

Your story makes me feel fortunate. My dentist can get me in within a week if a major problem. If I have pain its same day or the next even if its way after hours.

In Alabama, we use Southern Acupuncture to make a tooth stop hurting.  A patient has to take their right shoe off (we don't wear socks) and close their eyes while a buddy slams a 20 oz framing hammer onto the big toe of the right foot.  Like magic, a person forgets about the tooth hurting.  Works every time.  

If the pain comes back, then do the same on the left foot.

The antibiotics might mess with you, but not as badly as letting the mess get infected, to add to the current problems. 

That's what I had happen, but luckily local after hours Doc hooked me up with some Amoxycylin and pain killers that settled it all down. A day later the abscess burst in my mouth, which was NOT pleasant, but after that it healed up OK. 

But mine wasn't fully perforated, which must complicate things

I keep waking up in a puddle of drewl.  No ability to unconsciously vacuum the saliva out of my mouth while I sleep.  If I was to try and blow up a balloon the air would just come out my nose. No, I'm not going to try and blow up a balloon as this is no party.

@YellowHammer, or as I mentioned, you can burn yourself with a people,roaster for tooth relief as well.

I started to hit the "like" button on your post but couldn't do it.  I can sympathize and wish you a much speedier recovery going forward but I dang sure can't "like" news of someone going through what you have been experiencing.

I've had my truck and trailer loaded for ten days now to head to the cabin, but know better the shape Ive been in. Everyday I tell myself tomorrow. This morning it beautiful out here, but my gut once again says tomorrow.
