Well I got the rest of last fall's firewood cutting stuffed away for next winter, 4.7 cords (600 cu feet) in the basement the last day and a half. The other 2.5 cord was stacked in January under the porch. Still cutting 4 more cords, 2 for the house 2 for the shop. Still 3 wheel barrel loads frozen in ice, to be picked up later.

Swamp,

Your post pushed me to finish 1 to do item I've been avoiding.  I took all the wood from my last 2 remaining wood racks and stacked that in my shed. The shed now has 5 cord for next year.  I did have some loss from my racks.  The covers had been leaking and I tossed a good buckets worth, either into the bonfire or the owb at the farm.  One of the reasons I went to sheds was to get away from that, so baring any leaks, shouldn't have that kind of waste anymore.  I do hate stacking, and that wood got stacked TWICE! One more thing off the list.  Both old racks are currently converting to coals in said bonefire

Went out to where I cut and skidded out some firewood in the snow last month and picked up some tops and a dead beech.

Gman, is that simply a boom pole attached to a tractor skidding winch?

I'm curious because there is a handbook I've shared here before, originally from one of the Scandinavian countries on using an ag tractor for logging. Typical Scandinavian, they have really optimized the process to be efficient with limited resources, and they use a crane boom similar to your setup.

One thing I found really slick was their forestry trailer was set up with trip stakes on one side, and then a lever that is under the load that you attach the crane to. You wrap a chain to bundle the load, lift the lever, and roll the whole bundle off, then pull the wrapper chain.

New England woodlots are probably the most similar to theirs, or at least, there seems to be more small scale forestry management there.

I was thinking he did a thread on the build and maybe a video of it in action.

Brought home a buggy load of firewood this morning and one in the afternoon. That's 8 loads including yesterday on the trailer, 2 more makes a cord. Rain here now, so that put the brakes on firewood hauling for the day. So 12 more buggy loads for the shop. I'll probably have to put half of what's left to haul in the shop. I'd rather have it outside to dry, so I may come up with some planking. 20 more buggy loads for the house to follow. I haul out to a drier part of road and toss onto my trailer, 5 buggy loads is half a cord on there. That's all I want to pull with the little truck.

Two more buggy loads in today, that makes a cord in the shop woodshed. Hopefully will get the other cord in tomorrow with the trailer. I was tallying up the piles of wood, looks like 25 buggy loads on the ground, so will need to cut another 5-6 loads once I get the first bunch hauled in. I added capacity to the woodshed this morning for another 100 cu feet. Had a bunch of scrap lumber in the refuge pile for most of it, but two 2x4's.  Wind is a howling and sunny, good drying day. ffsmiley

Well I got two trailer loads in to finish up the shop wood. I added on another 100 cu feet of capacity since the last add on. That way all the wood is outside drying in the wind and sun. She's stuffed, down to the last stick of wood I had on the trailer.  ffcool  Now for a couple cords for under the porch for house wood. Day off tomorrow, rain, and gotta go to town.

I worked some on my firewood yesterday. Got the old stuff out of the way first. I moved what little was left in this years side of the shed into the basement and then moved three healthy buckets full of split and stacked wood that has been outside since last summer into the now empty 26/27 side of the shed. I also had a small pile of 8' logs on the ground that came off the trailer last fall. Over the winter I built a bucking table to use with the trailer so I figured I should try that out. My plan is to unload the trailer, which now has fold-down stakes, directly onto the table. But these I had to lift with the bucket grapple.

I blocked and split the small logs into the bucket.

I got two wimpy buckets full like this.

I like to stack wood in the shed from the bucket. It will reach to work the back row, 6th, and I can set it at the height I am working. If I split at the shed and toss it in there is a lot of picking up to do when stacking 7' high.

I put in almost a row which is 2/3 of a cord.

Nice looking setup g man. Anything to make it easier helps in the long run.

g man, I like your bucking table and I love your wood shed.
BTW, you have a very nice place up there. I `don't see any neighbors.

I'm with you on this. I have a SxS and thought I would end up using that to move wood to the woodshed. I tried a few loads, but I like working from the tractor bucket much better and I can fit more in the tractor bucket than the SxS bed. My wood shed rows are 1/2 cord each and I can do that with 3 heaping tractor buckets. I can't fit that much on the SxS without abusing it plus you have to reach in to get 2nd row of wood. I occasionally get a little too aggressive trying to heap the tractor bucket and end up losing the whole bucket load. One of these days I'll build a dedicated wood bucket that will go on the quick attach and hold the load a bit more securely.

I just refilled the side of my woodshed that I emptied this past winter. This will be for winter of 26/27. 25/26 has been stacked and waiting since last year. I have 27/28 stacked on pallets with a top cover. Should have made the woodshed bigger...

SwampDonkey

My wood here is cut and split in the woods by hand, it's easy wood to split. I have a network of narrow trails. So it's tossed into the SxS, then out to the trailer and tossed. Wood can be accessed off the trailer for stacking on either side, and the pile is one step away to stack on. SxS holds ~ 13 cu feet. More work since I have no way to move logs, and since I don't have an investment in other machines I don't have the outlay. I've picked up and moved a lot of wood in the last 5 years, more now with the shop to heat. Keeps me young.  ffcheesy
