how do you store your wood inventory?

I have semi-pseudo retired and am finally finishing insulation and sheetrock walls in my shop.  I have 2 corners of the wood shop with boards and slabs leaning against the wall.  most are in the 8-to-10-foot range.  My standard pallets for drying are 9 foot by 42 inches.  I now have floor space where the 4 x 12 stack of sheet rock has lived since 2006.  Deciding whether to build a rack say 3 feet wide by 8 feet tall by 10 to 12 feet long, or to buy metal shelving that is adjustable.  any ideas?  I keep a fair amount of wood in the shop to acclimate.  some slabs are 4 inches thick.

I have a loft area over what is/was to be a paint room with stacks of like species.  aprox. 10 feet in the air and 13 x 13 feet.  The new storage is for small numbers or singles of wood, looking for a project.  Leaning makes it hard to look at and retrieve a specific board.  I also want an area for shorts, like 3-foot cutoffs.  I am bad about any flat surface becoming long term storage.  I have hundreds of shots leaning against table legs.  I have seen many great ideas here over the years, and ready to get organized.

It doesn't matter how you store it. You'll always need the one on the bottom in the back.  ffcheesy

Why not make vertical storage racks? Gives you easy access to every piece of lumber and you can store a lot in the space you have. We can drag out the thread where I did mine and reactivate the design committee. They very were helpful for me. :uhoh:

I went to one guy's shop, and he had boards on small shelves.
As you walked in through the door, he had it on the right side. that way you pull it out through the open door. Seems like it was only a foot wide.

Jake, maybe it could rotate 180 degrees.   ffsmiley  top to bottom, front to back.

Howard, I am thinking about that for bigger slabs.  I have about a dozen 16-foot lengths of oak crown molding, and it may go on the top of a shelf 8 or 10 feet in the air, so I do not run into it, when I think I am "10 feet tall and bullet proof"!  Our Lowes has a bunch of indexed pallet racking.  It has sat forever, and I am good with the manager.  I may see if he can let a few go and use it.

Trying to decide if I want nice powder coated new manufactured stuff.  If I build it out of wood, that solves part of the problem.  just like getting the rolls of insulation and sheets of sheet rock installed.  stored in and on the wall.  footprint, only 4 inches by 34 feet. :wink_2:

Doc,

We have a place not far from me that sells new, but mostly used shelves and racking, maybe there is a place like that near you?

Howard,

You said Design Committee and my flip phone went off and I saw the Bat Sign, I mean Design Sign off in the sky.  Currently sharpening my pencil and searching for graph paper!

I am trying to wrap my mind around this - you have a sawmill. You have logs. You have lumber. You are trying to decide whether to use wood or metal?

the indexed metal can easily be revised if the spacing would be better at a different number.  I am thinking 3 wide x 12 feet long and 8 feet high.  If I have some 8-foot length boards, I can add shorts form the side.  solid floors to the shelves.  open sided about every 3 feet with uprights and crossmembers.
