I back tracked to Munising in the AM, did a little more In Pictured Rocks NP and found Muldoons Pasties, I filled my freezer to bring home.
I then found Matson's Fisheries. and got some smoked lake trout and smoked whitefish. they were awesome smoked right off the boat next to the dock.

I saw this charcoal kiln on the outskirts of Marquette

I found my way to the Marquette waterfront

this is the old ore dock, trains would dump into the top, then chutes would lower to the freighters to load them

it was a very busy area back in its day.

I found a really nice campsite at the L'Ance township park

Moving up the Keweenaw peninsula, Just North of Hancock is the Quincy Mine complex.
This mine operated from 1846 to 1945.
the #2 Shaft house ans some earlier ruins

It covers a huge area and has many ruins, most of the machinery was scrapped a long time ago

Having grown up in the Western NY snow belt this was interesting, That's a lot more snow than WNY

I continued on all the way to the tip of the peninsula and ended up at High Rock Bay, the last 7 mi were not a road but a trail and I questioned weather to continue several times.
it was well worth it

I got an early start the next morning. where the pavement ends near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula is the start of US 41

I got to Fort Wilkins Stat Park as things were opening up. Fort Wilkins was built to protect the copper miners from the indians. Interestingly 12 of the 19 buildings are original

the married family quarters

Thee was this interesting wood stove in the Kitchen, I had never seen one like it

I found this interesting quote in one display

Later that morning I got to watch a fog bank roll in across the lake. another first for me. It was a prefectly clear day.

The Eagle Harbor Lighthouse

Several people had told me I needed to get some Thimbleberry jam made by the monks.
I stopped at a couple stores and no one had any. driving down hwy 26 south of Eagle hHarbor I saw a sign for The Jam Pot.
It is a bake shop for the monastary. there was a line of at least a dozen people in this small shop filled with jams and baked goods.
I got a couple jams and some outstanding cookies.

I spent the rest of the day driving to Glidden Lake State Forest Campground. There was no one else there that night.

Nice pictures!

Interesting history note, the early mines in northern Wisconsin and the UP actually played a big part of the timber industry. The mines need huge quantities of timbers for shoring up the underground shafts, and logging camps were set up to supply the need.

I missed the TN omission, interesting seeing as it goes through downtown Nashville.

The other part of the timber industry was supplying wood for the charcoal kilns, the early furnaces used charcoal.

In some of the specialty steel mills they still use charcoal, I know of one charcoal kiln in Middle TN that their main customer is the steel industry.

I went through Escanaba and found my way to the harbor

Stopped at Fayette this is an iron mill town which ran from 1867 to 1891.

I stopped at Indian Lake Campground and went to Kitch-iti-kipi (Big Spring)

it was interesting to see the LARGE trout in the spring and the sand billowing up.

Then it was on to Detour Village and a visit with Jeff. We had a great visit and Sox, Gabby and Cedar had some good times too.
After a later start due to storms coming through, I stopped and got a few good pictures of the Mackinac Bridge and Lighthouse

The weather changed drastically and by the time I stopped at Trout Lake campground a little north of Saginaw it was hot and humid.
I hit 23 south to I75 and home.

This is my track for this trip

It's been hot and humid here in TN, but my Heat pump works great and I am slowly getting things done.

THis really made my day today, I was on my tractor mowing a corner of my property and saw this

My dogs were at the house and they never ran off, both fawns were sucking. I thought it was really cool to see.

During our travels we finally realized that one can not see and do everything so we learned to just enjoy what is in our path.   move_it
