Might be white oak but the bark looks more like black gum.  Do you have Black Gum up there?

The bark looks like white oak to me, but the heart wood is gone like is typical of the black gums in our area.

I'd say it's a hollow white oak and your gonna plant something in them.
 
That's what Tom said so I agree with Tom except I think the outside looks like white oak and the inside looks like black gum.  Does the wood smell really bad?  If it smells like someone cleaned fish on them last week then it's black gum.

You're gonna build a humongous bowl lathe and try and turn them into humongous bowls. :

The plan is to finish hollowing them out. Probably use a chainsaw and make relief cuts till I get the outer walls at about 2-2.5 inches thick. I am then going to build a fire in themand that should burn off mpst ot the ridges left by the chainsaw and my theory is drive any remaining moisture out of the outer edge, which is already pretty dry. This log has been laying at the mill for over 2 years.

The plan then is to strip the bark. The logs will become the support ends for my work/computor area in my office. The top is going to be white cedar with a flat urethane finish. Doors will be carefully cut into the logs, one will be storage the other will hole my computor CPU. Slots will be cut in the sides of the logs so canteleavered shelfs can be inserted to hold  printer, scanner, video equipment.

I have a grand picture in my minds eye that the family is having a hard time seeing. :

What does a rd neck say when you asked him what he did on his day off?

Got started on my desk project.

I was not expecting a jet engine! A couple sheets of newspaper and 2 hands full of dried leaves and away we went! (The swing is not in the fire its on the table) This was my first planned step. Enlarge the whole, kill the bugs and dry the rim.



After we had a roaring fire inside I tipped the log over so I could control the burn. (Yea, like this was something I knew, I just started trying stuff and this worked) I found by scraping often with the shovel where you needed to remove wood, thats where it would burn faster.



At the moment the log is laying out in the 20 mile an hour wind that is blowing. I washed the log out with the house and scraped more with the shovel and a wire brush to remove most of the char. I will bring it in the house later and brush the inside with sealer.

Our little dog scooter is showing me what he thinks of my project I guess. The log is 24 inches at the base.

THe fire seems to have loosened the bark that was quite tight. that will be a bonus if it peels of easily.

Didja all know that if ya hollow out a whole stump down to a 2 inch outer core that everything ya have left looks like quarter sawed? :D

I am now starting work on my second desk support.

Anyhow, I cut them around 4 inches longer(taller) then I need them so I had room to square and even them up.

My question is, could these be stood on end side by side and cut on a wood-mizer? The finished height will be 26-28 inches not settled on that yet but to begin with they are 32 inches. If so is there anybody within easy driving distance of me that has not put thier saws away for winter? or, is there an alternative way to cut them cleanly and smoothly and accurately?

      You could always swing up to the office in Crystal Falls. Then it's only a skip to Iron River, then I can cut them on my norwood. :D
