Texas Ranger

Being an old fire dog, and loving the remote sensing we have now, the following is a shot of a fire in Western Australia.

Great image.

I worked on the data aquisition systems for the Terra, Aqua and Ice satellites.
I worked on a few data acquision systems over the years at the Greenbelt NASA facility and that series of satellites gave the most awe inspiring images.

Sometime about a year after it's launch I remember being told that the Terra satellite had taken more earth resources data than all other satellite's combined, ever. One of the main reasons was storage technology had taken some great bounds and they could capture and store much more data than ever before.

I can hear it now....  Somebody explaining something to you:  "It's so easy a rocket scientist could do it."

Jon:  "But I AM a rocket scientist"   ;D

And it's getting worse.

We are more than 200 km away and can't breathe outside.

 :o Wow

That will explain why things were looking a bit smokey here in NZ today. We are a bit further downwind, but you could notice the smokey haze here.

At least the air tankers and helicopters don't have far to go for water. Those are tremendous images.

I've been put on standby for a trip down under.  I was notified back in early December to get my passport in order.....then there was a slight break in the weather and I was told to stand down.  Yesterday, the word came down to expedite the passport.  Looks like I may be headed that way after all.

My job will have me providing administrative support. My Australian counterparts are coordinating fire suppression efforts.  I'll fill the holes left by them in their absence.

My wife is paranoid about me being there.  (She watched a National Geographic show on funnel web spiders about a week ago, and she is terrified of spiders).  I'm rather looking forward to the trip.  ;D

My son-in-law was told to get ready to go just before Christmas,  the next day they called  off the trip.  Now he is off somewhere helping clean up damage from the ice storm.
