Bibby, it sounds to me like you undercogitated on the fuel bleedin' p'cedure.  Shoulda took about 2 evenin's in the shed by the wood stove, maybe even with a manual in yer lap. :P ;) :D :D

I'd like to have a good machine shed to work in.  But all I have is a muddy log lot.  The manual is of little use.  It's mostly for opperation - not for fixing.  Get a better manual with a toaster.!

I'd like to have a good machine shed too.  In mine, you gotta be real picky about where you sit if it's raining.  If it rains real hard, I gotta keep my feet propped up cause the water flows right through the middle of it. :-\  The best things is has going for it are;  It's mine!  It has snakes.  That tends to keep the little woman outta my hair when I'm in there. ;D ;D  I make sure I give her a snake report every month or so. ::) :D :D :D  I guess I otter post a pic of that ol' shed sometime.  Some esteemed FF personalities have set around in it with me.  Let me see, there was Tom and FDH and Swampy and FeltzE and Kirk Allen and Buzz Sawyer and Woodbowl and brdmkr.....
Oh yeah, my "woodstove" consists of an old Dodge wheel settin' up on 3 brickbats. ;D

Bibby the best thing for cleaning up the diesel and grease and oil crud on your hands  is good ole  ether.  I use it to clean up parts a lot  also .  It will blast the dirt out of the parts that you just dropped . or ones that have been stuck in the crud for a year or two.

I have been told that fresh cow manure work pretty god for getting the smell of diesel fuel off your hands since it
has chlorophyl in it which is a natural deoderizer. Of course then you have to wash the cow manure off with gasoline.

Pull that belly pan once and put a hole where it needs to be, I usually pull them anyway because it gives me a chance to look for leaks and clean out fire starting debrie.  As for the horizontal filter, pack some paper towels under to catch spill, also a quart oil bottle can be trimed to catch most spills.
