Here is a sequence of shots of me cutting a red oak prime veneer quality log for my customer who is a cooper.  I was going to sell this as veneer but it showed blue stain and in fact had 3 nails.  It was 10' 6" and 22 inch dia with less than an inch of taper with no visible flaws, other than the obvious stain.  1/4 scale gives 215 bd ft so it would have been almost a $200 dollar veneer log.  I am paying $100 for the log as I picked it up at the job site.

Here I am cutting the first half into quarters

Here is the first quater positioned to cut boards

boards being cut

cut boards being edged,  this first quarter gave a 10". 2-9" an 8 2-7's and 2-6's

starting on the second quarter and so on

Got 193 ft of Qsawn and 39 ft of non Q sawn
Any way you look at it at $3 per for the true quartered material it is the way to go.  Took 2 1/2 hrs including having a looky loo neighbor who wanted to talk and taking out the 3 nails after I cut them and using the same blade so as not to ruin another

Ya,
Thanks for the pics.

Not bad yields on the q sawn to plain/rift sawn.

22" to me is about the min size for that method.  I half the log take a couple of q sawn pieces of each side then cut the half logs through and through.  Kind of a version of what urban logger has on his web site.
;D

Wow!  thanks for the pictures.  Those are nice barrels!  Are they dry barrels?  I always heard true white oak(q alba) is what they use for wine casks.

UNCLEBUCK

Jack Daniels uses white oak barrels and add a touch of smoke to the inside of the staves , but I wouldnt know and am just guessing  ::)   ;D

yes red for dry and white for wet, he does char the white ones for red hook and other ale companies.  He works at the strawberry bank museum and makes barrels for PBS shows.  He is a gooooooooooooooood customer.
